Data usage

My mobile usage pattern has remained the same for years yet my data usage continues to grow. A couple years ago my average was about 550MB/month but now its more like 2.5GB/month. I can see a little increase, but 5X seems way out of line.

Also, I've noticed that the amount of data being sent from my laptop appears to be a much higher percentage of the total data than in the past. Why should my laptop need to send over 100MB's in a session and equal 10% or more of the total. Years ago the sent percentage was always less than 5% of the total.

In both cases my guess is this is the ever increasing data mining that Google and everyone else is doing and doing ever more aggressively these days.

Anyone else seeing this?

a couple of years (well, 2010), LTE just got started

now even if your usage doesn't change (eg 1 hour of web browsing, 2 hr music streaming,...), more data can get transferred per unit time

web sites cater more towards mobile devices, allow more pictures/video/content to be delivered

Again, my usage pattern hasn't changed much and LTE or no LTE the usage determines how much data not the size of the pipe. If I did a lot of streaming, and I don't, then perhaps there would be some justification. And again, my observation is that the amount of data my devices are sending versus receiving has increased enormously with the percent sent being over 10% or total data.

Do you facebook? My wife had her mobile data destroyed by all those stupid auto-running videos that showed up her wall. She burned through like 400 meg in a couple days from that.

No, the only social media I do is this here and a few other sites I've been on for years...

No FB, no Twitter, no Google+, no Linkedin, none of that crap...

The Fappening?

Haha ...... no!

My data usage isn't just the last month or so but over a longer period of time.

I checked out a couple 'pics' from the fappening but quickly came to the conclusion that Hollywood's best don't fare very favorably to the better girls in pron.

I check out the occasional YouTube video on my phone but the number and frequency of that hasn't changed much over the years.

No, I can't explain why my data usage has gone from 500MB/month to over 2GB/month.

One more data point...

As I sit here typing this I have Network Connection Status up and it shows the following:

Sent = 16,278,517
Received = 81,912,604

Which makes the sent data 16.6% of the total and 19.9% of the received. Again, in the past I found the sent data to be typically less than 5% of the total. This is my laptop BTW...

A few years back I gave up unlimited AT&T data because I was averaging 1 GB a month. It was a big mistake. At the time I was using wi-fi and 3G. With LTE in the mix my average monthly data usage now is roughly 2 GB and I basically use my phone in the same manner I did back then.
