Data recovery?

Lo, my mom just gave me a floppy disk, she said she had done a load of work last night and saved it on this floppy, but when she came to use it this morning it just says it needs to be formatted.
Of course she didnt save a backup or print out a copy or anything, just made one copy and now its bust lol.
I know theres probably no chance, but is there anything worth trying to see if I can retrieve this file?

Well you have 2 problems. The first being a possible fix for the second as well.

First you have a disk that is either damaged or just has a corrupt/damaged header. This needs to be fixed first with a disk repair utility. Your second problem may or may not be data recovery. If you can get the file to mount without a format, then maybe the file your mom saved is still there intact.

Winternals makes some pretty good recovery software and I use it mainly. Something like Disk Commander will repair damaged disk structures. Then they also have inexpensive version recovery software like File Restore.

I don't know what freebie downloads would work well. Maybe someone can recommend something downloadable you can try to repair the disk. That has to be done first. You may not even need to recover the file.
