This is a slave drive?
Not your OS drive?

Doesn't really matter, but either way,

There are softwares that allow you to backup the info on it..

Could be the partition table got messed up

A lot.

Will swapping it to another machine as a slave work as someone mentioned? What actually happened to toast the drive?

well, try a restart. . .see what happens, do it 4 or 5 times. . .it may have to update a few things prior to bootup, some config or something. It does cost alot of money to have the disks taken out and put into a new physical drive.

BTW... try uninstalling the drive in Device Manager

and using a different IDE cable and plug if you can.. just to rule that out

FYI-

One of our executives had a hard drive die in his laptop. He hadn't backed up in quite awhile :disgust: and had some extremely vital presentations, documents and e-mail communication. I got the green light for sending it out for recovery. The bill for the 3 CDs worth of information they were able to recover came to around $2,400.

Edit:

I guess my point is, make sure you try everything before you send it out. I'd try it in many different machines as both slave and master. And I'd also try a few different cables.

Who makes your BIOS?

I've had this problem before on a few computers that I've worked on, and it always seems to be some random glitch..

where did you get a smidge over 2 GB of data back for 2400 dollars? We priced out cleanrooms all over and a bill for 2gb of data would be closer to 24 THOUSAND dollars. Was it actual physical damage or just a software recovery.
