So a friend had her laptop drive on her, and I offered to try and recover some data from it (well try to). Turns out the laptop HD is SATA, and my laptop is PATA so that won't work. It appears as if the connections are the same as a desktop SATA drive, but I don't want to risk plugging it in to my desktop and frying the mobo, her HD, or both.
So can I plug a laptop 2.5 inch SATA drive (Hitatchi HTS541616J9SA00 model number) into my desktop to do recovery on the drive, or do I need to use her laptop to try it?
Update here is the new question: Okay well the drive appears to have a mechanical failure, tried it in my system directly and also in an external enclosure and do not feel the drive spinning at all. I am fairly sure the drive is shot (I can't get anything to recognize it from 4 different recovery tools including OnTrack's software). So anybody know how much it would cost to recover the drive (160 gb laptop drive, looking to recover 20 gb or so tops)?
