How do I turn this beast off?

I am looking at a computer for a friend and it will not allow Explorer to run. A pop up window comes up and will not continue.

Win XP SP3

any help is appreciated.

1. Click Start
2. Select Control Panel
3. Select System
4. Click the Advanced tab
5. In the Performance region select Settings
6. Click the Data Execute tab in the dialog box that opens
7. Select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except for those I select
8. Then add IE

Ok IE is added and still will not load, it claims IE encountered an error and then ask's if you want to send a message to MS. I've removed the drive and ran a virus check and nothing, I also ran Norton Win Doctor and corrected all the errors it found, but still will not load IE.

thanks

well got it to work, but not sure if it's the best way. Had to edit the boot.ini file to AlwaysOff and IE loaded fine.

DEP is a valuable security feature. Instead of shooting the messenger, consider fixing the problem, which is probably an out-of-date browser add-on. Running web browsers and their add-ons without DEP protection isn't something I'd be doing.

trust me you want DEP on. always.

go remove all the plugins you don't recognize; install secunia psi and check for outdated stuff.

there is NOTHING that affects DEP on my xp or vista machines.

the only thing i saw that caused a dep error a virus-like exe file run from the browser (ran fine if you save AS then run).

which is probably what you want.
