Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

A really, really bad thing -- the data is not being read correctly, so all of the copied files are corrupted.

It could be the operating system (virus, trojan, worm, spyware),
the disk file system (need to run disk tool with surface scan)
the disk hardware
the drive cable
the motherboard drive controller
bad RAM
overclocking causing any of above or CPU to be unstable
 
why is there always something wrong... its a brand new hard drive im transferring from...

Hi, CRC = Cyclic Redundancy Check. The name refers to the mathematics used to calculate the check sum. CRC can correct misreads if they are not too bad. All files have a checksum at the end. Any action on the file also recalculates the check sum. If the new one doesn't match the old one a read error has occured. Drive drivers retry several times. If it still does not read correctly the error is reported. Jim
