Hey guys
well i found a job at wachovia and applied for it, its a data entry job, hopefully this is going to be easy, i have to go for a interview next thursday at 9 AM so miss a bit of school, umm what do you think about me getting the job, 20 hours week, only saturday and sunday, have no idea on pay(anyone have ideas ?) will turn 18 in may and graduating high school
i seriously think that this an above average job for the typical high school graduate for the summer, what do you guys think ?
any if anyone has info on how much pay etc, lmk
any benefits as well

Sounds good if you can handle it. At a data entry job all you do is punch in data all day. They give you a bunch of paper with number/words/randomstuff on it and you type it into a computer. It's really not much better than repetitive factory work, but at least it's in nicer conditions.

What I mean is, why are you posting with "...", "lol !", "!", etc.? Those can all be used at certain times, but they're being used all over.

You started out your post like this:

I'm 17, 18 in May, so I'm a HS student. I've found a job that will require 20 hours a week of work. I think this is a pretty good job to have my summer after high school.

Anyone have an idea on pay or just information on this kind of job in general?

Compare that to what you wrote. I'm not being an ass, but just pointing this out to you. I know you said you're 17, but get real, if you want advice from the people on here with more experience or anywhere in life for that matter, you have to ask a bit better. This is kind of like me walking into a place with people that are working something similar to what I want to do with my pants falling down, hand over my balls, talking on my cell phone, backwards hat, pierced ears, fake jewelry with $ signs hanging down, etc. Basically, what you'd see in a rap video. After all that dressing up, I'd ask if they know anything about a certain profession - would someone really care or just push me to the side?

Sorry to type this out, probably no real point, but I get irritated when I see younger posters not being able to post decently.
 
I used to do data entry when I worked for WebMD while in college.

It paid ten bucks an hour with FULL benefits.

If you know how to work a keyboard faster than an 80 yr old tard... you qualify. However, you have to not suck ass with interacting with co-workers....that's half the battle.
 
Those early office jobs can be gold later on in your career after you graduate college. For example, I had a similar data entry job when I was a senior in high school. I did that for about a year while I was in high school. In college I would come back during the summers and do the same job to make some extra cash during school. After I graduated I noticed they had an entry level accounting position available and the job was as good as mine since everyone knew me and my work was quality.

This could be a good opportunity to make some contacts early on in your career if the company is large enough.
 
i had a data entry job as well... it was with charles schwab at corporate counsel... it required me to do a lot of microfilm and microfiche searching and getting statements and stuff... then entering things in our system, and sending out letters... i started at $8.50 (back in 1998) then the wage for a person in my position got raised to $13.00 (in about 2000)... so depending where you live, i think at least $10/hr.. $12/hr i think is the norm here in california

for me it was one of the more fun jobs i've had.. i was in san francisco, i got to go out with my friends for lunch.. and i loved my coworkers...
 
I did "Data Entry" for Verizon Online as a contractor with a 3rd party company for 2 years. I started at 9-something and when I left was getting almost 13/hr. By the time I left there was so little work to do that during a 10-hour overnight shift, I'd end up doing maybe 2-3hr of work. I spent the rest of the night gaming or watching movies on my laptop or neffing on ATOT. It was excellent.

Shortly after I left, they canceled the entire contract and lost two buildings worth of CSRs, offline teams (my position) and the ENTIRE Presidential Relations team for the north east area of VZO.
 
My first data entry job paid $10/h. This was back in the mid 90s. It was at a tiny company and there were only 4 people in my dept. Lots of fun and Doom multiplayer after hours. I only stayed in that position a few months and then got promoted and my salary >doubled within two years. Moral? It can be a good entry position, but in the correct company. Wachovia is such a behemoth though, so take the position for the summer. Make sure you're allowed to listen to music or radio!
 
to be frank, it's a piece of sh|t job. you may wonder why i'm saying this. it's because you won't really learn anything useful. you probably got the job because you have more knowledge about a computer than a monkey which is what's required for something like this.

sitting on a computer staring at a monitor for 8 hours every day for two months is also not good for your back, posture and eyesight.

you'd be much better off doing something where you'll learn something. even sales is better imo because you develop people skills: the ability to interact with people, sell a product, deal with people in general. these skills are highly valued by employers.

as someone mentioned, data entry is no better than factory work because it's the same repetitive bs, the difference being you are not sweating and hauling heavy boxes but are sitting in an air-conditioned office.
 
Boredom to the EXTREME! Better than other highschool fair, though.


The best way to get through data entry is through music or, even better, books on tape. Problem is, audio books are expensive... buy an iPod and download books on mp3 from the P2P network of your choice.
