Well I have been trying repeatedly to install MCE 2005 on this new system. A lot of the parts are older with a mix of new items. Originally my MCE 2005 disk wasn't bootable, so I installed XP then MCE over it with all kinds of problems. I found how to make my MCE disk bootable, so I did that and ran it from scratch, completely formatting (not quick format) the hard drive.
At that point MCE would load, but I would get all kinds of errors. IE would close randomly, explorer would have random problems, and when installing drivers and antivirus programs (AVG) I would get errors about data being corrupt or to redownload etc. I would try to redownload the item (if IE wouldnt crash) and I would get the same errors. Also when trying to update drivers that showed that had problems (even a couple of windows components) it would say that it could not update because of data being invalid.
With all of these data corruption errors and the such, it sounds almost as if it could maybe be bad memory? I know the memory is not bad, because it worked for a long time in another computer without problems, but possibly this new motherboard doesn't like this memory. There are two sticks of different brands, and they WERE NOT used in dual channel mode. Also, I tried seperately with each stick with no success. Now I am getting BSOD's as the computer tries to boot into Windows. One stick is generic, the other is SpecTek from OfficeMax, both PC2700.
The Hard Drive is brand new, except that it has been formatted multiple times while troubleshooting this issue. The DVD Drive is pretty old, and I just did a light cleaning with compressed air (slot load) before it was installed, nothing crazy at all. It worked properly the day before it was installed and has never given me a problem before.
Any suggestions as to what I should try? My system specs are as follows:
AN35N-Ultra (refurb from newegg - seemed brand new, sealed)
Duron 1200MHz
Artic Cooling HS/F
Mad Dog PS from CompUSA (FAR one)
250GB WD HDD
Radeon 9000
ATI E-Home Wonder Tuner Card
Pioneer 16x DVD Drive (A105 I think?)
I believe that's basically it, nothing else was installed yet.
I can take another DVD Drive from another computer, I can take the 80GB HDD out of my external case, I have a spare motherboard (same one- not yet tested), I can try RAM from another computer that is very compatible, and I can try a 9600XT from another computer even, but which route would be best? I'd rather now have to cannibalize my daily computers too much.
I am thinking trying swapping RAM and maybe the DVD Drive first?
Any help would be very much appreciated. I will check this thread a lot, so please ask any questions about anything I may not have included.
