Data Corruption/CRC Errors? Help!

Hey ppl.
Currently im running a pretty old PII system, and ive noticed a bit of weird data corruption and errors going on. I wanna get it optimal for my sister to use.

The configuration in the box is:
PII 300
i440LX
128Mb SDRam (2x64Mb PC100)
Matrox G200 8Mb
3DFX Voodoo2 12Mb
13Gig Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm
3Gig Quantum
HP9100+ CDRW 8/4/32
3Com 10/100 Network Card
Amax Video Capture Card
Umax SCSI Scanner Adapter

The problem is, very very VERY frequent data corruption. An example would be, saving a file from the internet and being fine, but later to find the file is corrupted. Or even it being corrupted the first time around (For example I've downloaded the patch for HalfLife/Counterstrike over 5 times on a 56k modem and every time it is a corrupted file/CRC error, and its from the official site too).

I can reiterate this when I am backing up files to my CDR. Files are written on the cd but every time there are corrupted files (in large exes, compressed files, drivers, updates). I have to verify my files are written on the cd properly every time (I use WinSFV) and every time there are CRC errors. Oh and every backup cd (one made from an image) is corrupted as well.

Things appear to be corrupted when using applications too. When working on a photoshop file, saving it, and opening the same file again, that exact file is corrupted. This is all in Windows 98SE. It gets weirder in Win2k.

In Win2k, it shows the Win2k logo, then jumps to a blue screen saying something about memory. Then shuts down by itself. However i reset the computer like 3 times, and it booted in to win2k. The strange thing thats happening now is, as soon as ive logged in as Admnistrator it shuts down by itself yet again!

Had enough?
My guess is its the RAM im using (possible corrupted RAM?) as the HD's are quite new with no bad sectors, and i just got the CDRW not a while ago. I could be totally wrong, and the problem could be the crappy LX motherboard? or even the PII CPU itself...

Im going crazy.
Thx!

First, I would run scan disk and check disk. Then try run a defrag and hope it clears up.

Sounds like it might be time for a format and start clean.

Make sure that your IDE cables are ok. Let us know what you have already checked.

Is the system getting too hot? Is it overclocked? Maybe it's the powersupply. Power related issues can happen when adding another device if you have a weak power supply. Are you using the latest ASPI layer that HP recommends? My best guess is that it is probably power related since it happens on your hard disk and your writer. Take the writer out and see if the issue with the harddisk and downloading goes away.

Give me more details.

Hope this helps

based on my experience, the LX boards has some compatibility issues with large then 8.4G HD.. but I'm not sure if it's your situation though. I used to have a P2L-97, and the moment I get my 13.6G Maxtor, I have all kind of problem with data corruption. but I was running Win95/98SE, not win2k. and I checked with M$'s support and found out it's the large IDE issue with LX boards.

but you also want to check to see if there's a virus that's playing havoc on your file system..
