Dat Phan is NOT funny

Anyone else watch all the Last Comic Standing episodes?

Dave Mordell hit the nail on the head when he said (more or less), "I didn't know you could make a 10 minute set out of making fun of your mom."

I only saw a couple of episodes.. did he win because the voters felt pity for him? I saw in the first episode he started crying because he was poor.

I think he won because people like short little vietnamese people who make fun of themselves and their own culture. Even a KKK member can laugh at that.

I think Dat's act got old because we saw it so many times. I laughed at his jokes the first time I heard them...but by the last episode they were pretty old. Yet at the same time, I wasn't impressed by anyone else during the last episode.

Dave and Jeff - who both got booted - were both much better than anyone that outlasted them. They were polished, prepared and most of all funny. Too bad that means nothing against, "<stupid viet accent>Dat Phan you go to medical school. You no make the jokes!</stupid accent>"

Every one of the last five could be summed up in a stereotype. None were really that funny either.

Also, there were other comics on that show that had a theme. Tess kept talking about how volumptuous she was, another woman kept talking about her daughter and husband, the fat guy kept talking about how fat he was and Dat Phan had his mom.

Dat wasn't all that funny, but he got the vote because the other people in the "house" where they were staying were basically a bunch of sophmoric self-centered jerks. He was the only one that came across as a half-way likable guy. His act wasn't all that funny, but he won for being the only non-@ss of the group.

I thought his acts were funny...he talked about his mom most of the time, but other people kept talking about the same thing, too, as mentioned above.

But it doesn't look like he is funny most of the time - maybe he was uncomfortable in the house when everyone was an ass?

Neither one of the comics was good enough to be a main act IMHO. Other than talking about being fat and living in "da hood", Ralphie May doesn't have much of an act either.

More than anything, I think dat Phan won because he's something new. The rest of the acts have been done and over with already. I guess they want a new face in the comic scene. You don't see too many Vietnamese comic dude around, do you? To sum it up, none of them are funny. They manage to get some chuckle out of me, but nothing I would roll on the floor about.

I would tend to agree with your assessment. Dave was probably the funniest comic of the group...but since everyone else acted like asses, I was glad to see Dat win, despite him being not that funny.

Lots of other threads about this and I totally agree.

Margaret Cho invented or at least did Dat Phans act and did it better and see where she is today.

It was fixed from the beginning. I said it when he beat Dave and I said it when he went last at the final show.

Dave or Rich should have won, Ralphie third after those 2. Corry and Tess will be around longer than Dat. I liked him but he has no longivity.

I thought ROb was real funny and original...that semicolon stuff had me rolling!

The reason why we see Dat's jokes over and over is because NBC only plays a few min of the entire set -- and they chose to play those certain parts...i don't know why, but they did.

But I think that Dat won because everyone was a dick in that house to him, and america felt sorry for him.

I thought he was funny. A lot of black comics make fun of black/white differences, fat people make fun of fat people, that mother in the show talked about her daughter all the time, etc. I guess their lives evolve into their acts, too.

As opposed to fat comics who make fun of themselves and their own culture, black comics who make fun of themselves and their own culture, white comics who make fun of themselves and their own culture, Jewish comics who make fun of themselves and their own culture, Southern (redneck) comics who make fun of themselves and their own culture, neurotic female comics who make fun of themselves and....et. al.

Oh, but those are all funny and acceptable things to make fun of, and there's absolutely nothing funny about short little vietnamese people or their culture at all.

The bit about the guy talking to him at the urinal was pretty damn funny.
