Which one do you have and/or which would you recommend? After almost getting hit twice in the past month, one of which would have been caught on dash cam, I think I'd like to pick one up for each of my cars.

What do you recommend? I'd prefer one that plugs into the cigarette lighter I think.

I was kind of hoping for something in the $30-$35 range with a microsd slot and at least 720p resolution. Pipe dream i guess, lol.

I'm checking the links above, thanks!

Eh, you can try the cheapo ones on eBay & Amazon in that price range, but it's hit or miss with quality & features.

Here ya go.

Vivitar makes a 'goPro' clone. It works with goPro mounts (everything but the actual case because the cameras are different shapes). And it comes with about $100 worth of goPro style mounts (bike mount, wrist mount, suction cup, etc).

$40-$50.

It actually has a 'dash cam' mode. I have 1 in each of my cars.

They have battery power, but I use the USB cable to a cig adapter (usb adapter). The dash cam mode actually cycles through and deletes old footage, so you can just keep it running without having to make room for new video. And whenever it gets power from the USB, it turns on a records automatically.

So as it is now, as soon as I start my car, it's filming. And the quality is good enough.

There's several different colors, so here's the search results... just pick the color you want.

Here's an example vid.. a guy mounted one on an RC car.

I have a older one so I don't recommend it because others are better now.
The best bang for the buck right now from what I have seen is the G1W. Can get for less than $60
http://dashcamtalk.com/g1w/

If you want a nicer one then the Powerucc Panorama II. It cost around $190.

A mid-priced GPS dash camera at $115 is this one...

Personally, I'd go wit the G1WH over the G1W. For about $8 more, you can get a wider viewing angle.

A friend of mine ordered that while I ordered the RX300.

We're also paying attention the the Garmin models that RGUN is getting. Getting something from a more reputable brand (with US presence) would be nice to get rid of the potential need to ship something all the way back to China.

I wonder if anyone makes one with the lens and sensor remote from the LCD/SD card? I would be nice to only have a tiny tiny sensor on the windshield and hide the rest in the glove box. Kinda like how rearview cams work.

Anyone makes a dash cam that mounts to the dash instead of the windshield?

No one makes a CAMERA that mounts to anything, much less the dashboard or windshield. The mounting unit is what attaches to the dashboard or windshield.

Get a camera that has the little threaded hole for standard camera mounts. Then get any kind of mounting bracket you want.

Suction cup is good, but most dashboards are textured so things WON'T stick to them. I use a gorilla tripod and wrap it around my rearview mirror.

If you didnt plan on selling your car you could get a mounting bracket that uses screws or bolts.
OR you could use some sort of sticky pad, again with the risk of damaging your dashboard permanently and lowering resale value.

:hmm::hmm::hmm::hmm::hmm::hmm:

Needing dash camera's because the popo here is full of bs. Need to be able to record clearly while driving on the interstate and low light/night visibility. I'm trying to get a 360 degree recording of my car.

*edit* move to OT please.

Its been working flawlessly since June.

I haven't caught anyone doing anything very stupid yet just people trying to change lanes..etc

The best chip available is the A7-LA50 incorporated in the Mini 0803. For day, and night vision, there is nothing better at the moment. Soon to be released is the GuardTrak which will employ the new A7- LA75 CPU.

Most dash cams have cheap plastic lenses that will yellow and fog after a year or so.

Dash cam died the other day. It won't turn on. I opened it up, the battery looks good and none of the wires are broken but I am at work and can't hook the multi meter to it to see if it still has a charge or charges at all. At any rate, it lasted what.. 1.5 years? Pretty crappy...

A year or 2 is not to bad for the cheaper models to be honest. They are Chinese low price tech and are sitting under the hot sun all day.

I was going to mention there are apps you can d/l for your phone, but as someone mentioned it's a hassle to always mount it and make sure it's running. However, it is on the cheap side!

It wasn't cheap, around $50.00 iirc. Cheap to me would be under 10 bucks. $50.00 for 1.5 years of use is pretty pathetic.
