Dasani sucks!

Did you taste the water, chicken little?

Try distilled water - it's taste is horrible. To make water taste normal, salts are added. One of them is NaCl.

edit: fixed typo

Hinkly, Aquafina, and the like don't do that.

salt is a mineral.
if you filter your water to such a degree that you might need to add something back, sure salt is nothing horrible.
all bottle water is bs anyways

I haven't tried brands you mentioned, but maybe they just don't write about it?

Or they pack natural water which already has some Na and Cl in it (they do not boil and condense it).

edit: why is bottle water BS? My water tastes bad, I filter it and it still tastes bad.

Ozarka bottled water =

I've only found two major brands that add salt: Dasani, and Evian.

All the other major brands dont add salt...

Isn't drinking completely pure water actually bad for you? I have no facts to back that up, but I think I heard it somewhere.

Well supposedly RO, carbon, UV. But who knows whats true.

I have awful well water, and I have to buy drinking water. That's why I'm upset.

What's RO?

Leros - not sure.

Amaroque - distilled and drinking water are different things. Distilled is kind of water you find in chem labs. It tastes very bad. Drinking is distilled with stuff added to it so it tastes better.

Actually, they don't usually distill drinking water. They usually filter tap water, or maybe put it through a reverse osmosis unit and perform a couple of other treatments, then bottle it and sell it at a huge markup. There are very, VERY few times when it's worth buying bottled water.

Do you think Dasani taste bad? If not, what's the big deal?

It's just salt, not elephant semen or anything.

Not really. It just doesn't have any essential minerals in it.

Normal tap water does have trace amounts of magnesium and calcium in it, so you get a tiny amount of these minerals from drinking it. Overall, however, the amount is very small - only a minute fraction of the amount that a normal diet of food provides.

It is possible that the above statement, is slightly oversimplified, and that the body's regulatory functions don't correctly respond to pure water, and therefore overcorrects salt balance by losing salts - however, there are only a very few laboratory rat studies to support this, and the effect is marginal at best.

I agree, but you, and me get more than enough salt in the foods that we eat.

Not necessarily. Depends on your diet. But drinking pure water when your body is very dehydrated usually isnt as good as also drinking water that contains minerals. Its important to keep the electrolytic concentration in your body correct as well as hydrating the body. An upset of electrolyte concentration can be very hazardous to your health (what would happen if you drank pure water).

Yes, but what you are saying is that you are running a marathon.

Gatorade provides the sulfates in that respect. But I'm talking about just drinking water.

My water is well water. It's run through a whole house filter. Then, it passes through a water softener. The water softener removes more minerals. However, as a result, it also picks up a little NaCl in the process. My water tastes excellent. If I bottled it, I'd have to include that salt was added, because it wasn't in the water when it came from the well.

While I dont want to argue too much, its always important to keep your electrolytes and water level good in the body. Salt and sulfates aren't the only electrolytes that your body needs. And you are right, if you have a well-balanced diet, you should be able to get all you need (for normal day to day living) from your food.

In the end, just drink what you like to drink. Frankly, for me, the water tastes better when it has minerals in it (Fiji, Dasani, etc) and helps me to stay hydrated while also keeping the electrolytes balanced. Typically if the water doesnt taste good, i wont drink it (I would rather drink soda). Some people are like this, so I guess these types of water help them to stay hydrated. For you, you don't need these waters as you are perfectly happy with normal water.

Different strokes for different folks 🙂
