Das Boot!

Fantastic film. If you ever have 5 hours to kill go rent the director's cut. German film, about a U-boat.

Its quite a ride, I highly recommend it.

In the original - you never saw the outside of the boat, which added a HUGE amount of suspense.

From what I've heard, in the director's cut they added a cheap sub-in-a-pool effects to it, which severly changes the mood of the movie.

I bought the Director's Cut dvd, and for some weird reason, the audio and video aren't mixed correctly. The video lags slightly behind the audio, si I was never able to watch the whole thing.

Are you saying that in the original it never had any shots that were outside the sub or that it just didn't have shots that showed the sub? The ending of the director's cut shows a shot outside the sub...

Even the ending? Because that takes place outside the sub and I doubt they could have added that afterwards.

"I don't believe it, shes holding together!"

Then just about everything that can break and let high pressure water in does just that. Sheesh.

I'll have to look into the non-uncut version, or maybe the cut version. The original uncut version does have the sub in a bathtub effects, and I can see where it would be more suspenseful without those.

Hah, that one scene when they are trying to run through gibralter, they are on the surface at max speed, the sub is banking every which way, shells everywhere . . . beautiful.

And I don't see any homosexuality in the movie, besides the fact that there are only one or two female characters. I mean, basically the only thing the crew talks about are whores . . . . and they've all got crabs from their last shore leave . .

the ending was a bit of a bummer eh? "good job guys, you survived!!! OH SH1T, INCOMING!!!"

Yeah, I agree. Now, i know the planes they used were just whatever they could find with propellors, but they had some planes that might have been supposed to be B-25s. Perhaps Yossarion was on the raid?

So far I have only seen the original US (shortened) version, but our library has the longer version. It seems every other weekend I check that out or Cinema Paridiso (another great movie, totally different) but never get around to watching it.

Das Boot (the original, at least) is one of the best war movies ever made ever, in my opinion. I've been on US subs of that era, and man are they tiny. The movie conveys this clastrophobia very well.

I just picked up the director's cut (not the newest release) the other day and haven't got around to watching it yet. glad to hear it is a great movie 🙂

the best part of the director's cut is the remastered surround sound. It really adds to the experience!

The part about the airplane attack on the U-boat base was rather far fetched. U-boat bases in WWII had a large concentration of anti-aircraft batteries which protected them against air attack. You would be forced to drop your bombs from a very high altitude, and your accuracy would be next to nill.

Agree!! Great flick, watched it a few years ago.

How would you compare it with u571?

I wouldn't. U571 is a horrible pile of crap compared to Das Boot. I can barely bring myself to mention the two movies in the same post.

U571 had Bon Jovi in it. I'll say no more.
