Darwinism: Dying in a forest fire?

Fire fighting personnel aside, what's with 11 people dying in the California fire so far?

If someone told me the canyon next to my house was on fire, I'd get the fvck out. How does it "sneak up on you?" It's not like they didn't know it was out there.

The average person doesn't understand the nature of fire and smoke. They overestimate their abilities and underestimate the deadliness of heat and smoke generated by wildfires.

I know what you mean.

I feel the same way about drowning. I've been swimming in lakes, rivers and streams all my life, so it seems absurd.

But I don't ever forget the fact that it's still possible..

Just careless I guess. I wouldn't go up in smoke without a fight. If I was surrounded, I'd at least make a run, jump and roll for it.. What do you have to loose?

ever hear of people who don't know how to swim, or currents/riptides that take people underwater and/or out to sea? There are tons of ways to drown.

Did you miss my 2nd sentance? I said just because I know how to swim and am experienced in outdoor swimming, doesen't mean I get careless and think I'm invincable in the water.

But you see... when you are in the water, you are actively trying to stay alive. When the fire is coming, you aren't. You're just doing whatever you normally do. It takes effort to not drown.

many firefighters have died fighting forest fires, so its not a matter of stupidity ussually. huge fires create incredible amounts of heat and rising air that create their own weather patterns basically. huge rapid airmovements can make flames move faster then you could run, its not like a small fire at all.

I said fire fighting personnel aside...

well obviously some of the people didn't retreat to the safety of their SUV.

in fact most SUVs are built for the purpose of driving straight thru forest fires to safety on the other side.

He has a good point though. If the trained professionals die, most of us normal folk are fscked if we're stupid enough to stick around until the flames are biting your ankles. 😉

Well regular non-fire fighters don't have a magic ring that protects against the same thing. I can't see myself dying in a fire, but I've never been near a huge one. I suppose if you were old and slow you could easily get nailed by one in your house. If you're outside I can't really see how one would get you if you have a car and road, etc.

i doubt u can out run a huge fire like that, the news said the firefighters in rancho cucamonga barely had enough time in their firetrucks to even get away from the huge blazes chasing them.

as for ppl dying in a forest fire....think of all ur posessions, years of work, all ur livelihood in that house.... the fire is coming but u keep on hoping that it will just move on by....or just the fact that everything will be loss... given that situation ppl don' t think straight, emotionally they become distraught and their decision processes fail. Not that they are stupid, we all know that fire burns.......just that other things blur our thought. If u are out camping, then just moping around and watching the fire is plan stupid.
