a lot of the lower 9th Ward people had no way to leave. buses were limited to non-existent for them, and considering how poor a lot of those people were/are, no other means to actually leave.
They had so much time, they could have walked to Texas by the time Katrina hit. Hell, I know a guy who put all of his valuables in a backpack and rode his bicycle out of there. Don't tell me they couldn't have gotten away.

The only people I pitied were the mentally and physically disabled who couldn't just leave under their own power.

If they are rich and on vacation and did not want to leave then the answer is simple. Bring them supplies and SELL them to the idiots at a price that includes delivery...OR...offer to ferry their dumb ass off the island. If they stayed on their own and did not have sufficient supplies they are complete idiots.

No one should force you to leave your home. But they aren't obligated to take care of you after the fact either.

Imagine the incentive for the government to not help them after the warning. Think of the estate tax cut!

Those of you saying the people of Hatteras are Idiots have lost your minds. IF you had any bit of a clue you wouldn't have posted such stuff... so here, ill fill you in.

1. Hatteras isn't just a vacation area. AROUND 7,000 PEOPLE LIVE HERE YEAR ROUND!

2. Just about all of the visitors did evacuate... there may have been a handful that stayed behind, but odds are they were with friends and ready for it. (i'm not saying there were a few people here who shouldn't have been)

3. OUR OWN NC Taxes are paying for OUR OWN struggle. so your argument their is shot.

4. Are you telling me if a storm was coming for your house, and/or your business, YOU wouldn't want to stay so you could clean up and take care of your property?? Who else is going to do it while you are stuck off the island and Mold is growing everywhere because you let the water sit in your building instead of cleaning it out early??

5. Should any town hit by a tornado/flood/earthquake be required to "Foot the Bill" for themselves? Are you kidding me with that statement??

please... have some sense. I am from hatteras and was blown away by what was said on here. I made an account just so i could let you know what is going on.

have some decency...... People are struggling right now.

You rich people are so sensitive.

What does this have to do with Darwin?

Isolated from the mainland, the people of Cape Hatteras will intrabreed and eventually create a new species of "humans," possibly superior to Homo Sapiens, possibly fish-like.

(a la` Galapagos Islands, by way of Cthulhu)

This wasn't Katrina, thankfully. Our nation has gotten much better at disaster preparednes/notification. There is no way that someone didn't know this was coming.

I hear you about the year-round residents. AND?

Govt Official: Hey, a really, really bad hurricane is coming. 100% chance it will hit here. We have ferries leaving at xx, yy, zz. Be there.

Permanent Resident: I have my tourist trap shop! I sell boat-shaped condoms to tourists! If I am not there after the water recedes there will be mold!!! OMG!!!! You can't possibly...wait...can you hold? I"m getting a call from Paul my stockbroker...."

Govt Official:Yeah OK...if you are not out of there by 12:30PM tomorrow you are on your own.

/next day at 1:00PM
Perm Resident: They left us to die! Look at my award-winning Pekinese!!! He is sad!!! OMG!!!! The mold!!!

 WTF-ever. Pay attention or pay the price. You live there 365; and the hurricane will ignore you WHY? The govt should give you preferential treatment WHY? My tax dollars should go to you WHY?

I'm going to run for congress. My slogan will be "Michael D. Common sense for the common man." Instead of shaking hands hands and smiling at people, I will give smack downs and scowl at idiots who lack common sense.

Vote for me!

ps
If a fucking hurricane (not "a storm") was dead-eye aimed at my house/city I'd be out of there so fast I'd leave flaming footprints. Pack up the family and vital documents/photos/hard drives (our life is digitized thank you very much) and we're gone. OOOOH> MOOOLSDDDDDSS!!! And? We as Americans should be grateful we have a government that cares enough to give not only a warning, but a heads-up on the evacuation plan and where to be and what time and you KNOW they will show up to rescue your dumb ass that didn't leave under your own power a day earlier when they told you LEAVE NOW. See the recurring theme here?

Residents of major cities in the USA getting caught off guard by hurricanes ended about a hundred years ago. Unfortunately, human stupidity continues to this day.

You got it wrong Kilroy. We don't give a shit if you stay or not. Just get your shit together before you place a hardship on everyone else that will have to feed you etc... Get it.

What bugs me is that these people will continue to build homes on pilings 20 ft, from the high tide, WTF, these homes are gonna get creamed every time a storm roars through then all of our insurance gets jacked to cover the losses. Not just NC either there are plenty of homes in FL that have no business being so close to the ocean, If someone wants to take that risk fine, insure yourself..

1) Hatteras is a huge vacation spot. You cannot tell me that all 2,500 of them are residents. In any event, you have to have $$$$$$ to live there so cut me the shit. We're not talking Detroit where finances would be a constraint.

2) So you know all 2,500 that stayed? Sure you do.

3) So Hatteras has their own National Guard? GTFOOH. It was state (and possibly federal) tax money used to rescue you and your buddies.

4) No, I wouldn't stay because I'm not a moron and abide by the law that said you weren't allowed to be there. I would hit a hotel that is out of the evac zone and get back when I could to clean up the mess. Your mentality is exactly how people die in a storm thinking they will survive. A higher category and all 2,500 of you would be dead and washed to sea. There'd be nothing left to "clean the mold" out of.

Again, IMO there should be state laws that fine and imprison morons that stayed and take resources from places that need it.

5) Who said any town should foot the bill by themselves? Are you illiterate? Reread the OP and tell me where it says that. Why do you think states federally declare a state of emergency?

Yes, people are struggling right now but I don't feel sorry for 2,500 who stayed and need to be shuttled food and water via National Guard. Note that it isn't 100 people or less (the norm for a town) or even 500. It's 2,500. That's utterly ridiculous for ground zero of a major hurricane. Maybe something is in the water there that turns your brains into mush.

i have been going to the grocery store and coming home to cook every night... but that is because i have a home to come too. i haven't received anything different that what i would get on an average day here.

its the people whos home's washed away and lost EVERYTHING they own that are at Shelters and getting help....

how in the WORLD can you be mad at someone who's life just got flipped upside down and now has absolutely nothing????

get a clue.... dont tell me what you would/would not do in this situation until you're in it.

plus.... the situation you are talking about sounds a lot different than what is actually going on.

dont let the News fool you... because things are a LOT different that what you might be hearing as far as supplies/help.

BB--msot of the people here are trolls, or simply have no perspective on the issue.

they live in landlocked hell-holes surrounded by cornfields, haven't seen an ocean in their lives, and believe that anyone that needs or takes government money for whatever reason are devils trying to ruin their lives.

don't listen to them and gl to you and your family.

I know property is expensive out there, but people that think Hatteras is a haven for wealthy people have obviously not been there. They seem to think this is Cape Cod or the Hamptons, lol. fucking yankees.

Nope, not mad at them because they'll be dead when a bigger storm hits, it's called natural selection.

NC shouldn't be immediately wasting resources to bail out people who didn't evacuate, it's that simple. Now it's fine: time sensitive disaster response mattered yesterday. Today, who cares? Everyone is picking up the pieces in every state on the east coast and have returned. There are shelters on the coast of every state.

so how is it any different there than here? even if the people left, where would they go and who would take care of them? if they dont have anything?

plus... who would clean up the mess that is here? somebody has too, it might as well be the people who live here, and are HAPPILY stuck here.

by the way (in case anyone is wondering) the 2,500 people who are stuck here (if that is accurate) do NOT make up the entire population of the island by any means. most people DID leave.

and officially today... Food Lion trucks, Ice Trucks, Gas Trucks, etc. have made it on the island. so Free food is only going to those who need it, not those of us who were spared.

@zinfamous -
thanks for the heads up... i knew posting on here would cause some flaming. but i was just too torn up that people would think that way, i had to say something even if it made no difference. gotta try... thanks though for the support. 🙂

Dear Hatteras morons:

Ok, you have a vacation house there that cost millions of dollars and you don't want to leave. But now you're costing NC taxpayers a lot of money to shuttle food via the military b/c you couldn't gtfo when you were told. People like this should be fined and imprisoned for taking resources away from people who really need it.

What do you think?
They are laughing their ass off because via flood insurance taxpayers are going to contribute to rebuilding their multi-million dollar beach houses.
