Gonna die alone. Better drink my own piss.

There's a documented case where a snowboarder lived because he followed Bear's instructions when caught in a blizzard. The guy was lost for a few days, and lived when built a snow cave and burrowed himself in it.

Sorry to be contentious about this; my wife threw this girl's death into my face a few days ago and I'm still a little bitter about it... One of my climbing partners and I did a hike last Wednesday, late in the afternoon. Temps were below zero, and we planned to hike into the western North Carolina mountains to a waterfall that we hoped would be frozen. The wife wigged out and didn't want me to go. Mrs Ned had read about this girl and tried to make the case that we, too, were going to die because we don't know how to take care of ourselves in the wild. Nevermind that for many years we've been climbing together in much more extreme situations in similar temperatures...

NP... I also just got done defending my own self. Went to visit my family (they live in NJ, I live in NH) and had to hear about the danger of the mountains, that poor girl from NY who died, you must be crazy to go winter hiking, what if in case of an avalanche, why dont you go to a warm place for relaxation, you must be crazy to "have fun" when its below zero. blah blah blah blah

the obvious question is: dear mother of god why

The trails/hikes you come to know are totally different when hiked in the winter. 6 months ago, I was hiking in shorts and sunglasses. Last month it was Gore-Tex, snowshoes and fleece insulation. Nature is beautiful in all of its seasons IMO.

Not everyone is put off by the cold weather. Those who have a love of the outdoors do it no matter what the weather.

Overconfident but clearly someone above average in all aspects so Darwin award does not apply.

There is no exclusion from the Darwin award for past achievements or challenges overcome. It is judged solely on the merits of the incident for which it is under consideration.
