Darryl Strawberry sentenced to 18 months in prison

I think it is an incredible waste of our resources to send people to jail because of drugs. Why should anyone care if Strawberry or anyone else does drugs? It is none of my business.

As a society we could be spending the money we waste in jailing drug users on building schools, paying teachers more, and helping people go to college. We could be upgrading our water treatment infrastructure or investing in energy production research.

I just do not see the benefit of putting these people in jail. They have enough problems already without having their lives screwed up by spending time in prison and having a record.

I dunno - I have a hard time seeing why he needs to go to jail. Strawberry is definitely a real loser and should not receive any special treatment because of his celeb status, but as far as I can see he has only harmed himself through his behavior. As a taxpayer I am pretty tired of paying to confine drug users for long prison sentences.

Personally, I think Daryl Strawberry is just as bad, if not worse, than Robert Downey Jr. and RDJ has been in and out of jail for years. DS probably has just skip prison time longer because he's an athlete, who seem to get preferential treat beyond that of Hollywood types.

I don't know about that (and frankly I can't see any benefit to confining Downey either). It is not really fair to compare two separate cases in different states, but Downey's original arrest also involved an illegal weapons charge, and his behavior seemed even more out of control than Strawberry's (remember when he trespassed and ended up passing out in the room of a neighbor's children?).

I actually feel sorry for Strawberry. The man is sick and hasn't found a way to solve his problems. Jail isn't going to help him any.

BTW, I am a diehard conservative... but that is the way I feel.

<< It's about friggin' time these judges stopped catering to these drug addicted superstars that buy their way out of everything: >>

You don't think 18 months isn't catering? This guy's been convicted of drug posession like 20 times, and he doesn't get slapped until now?? Granted, you don't see sentencing like that all the time, but you gotta remember that the Straw's been busted many a time...
