Darn it! Broke my gas line.

Little plastic L-shaped nipple (or whatever it's called) that clips onto the fuel filter. Snapped it in half on a little (8 inch tall) mound of hay. Car stalled, I figured out what happened almost immediately and thought "you've gotta be kidding me!" I could probably back over that bit of hay 1000 times and never have it even touch the bottom of my car. Everything just happened to line up perfectly at the angle I was at.

What're the odds that Autozone or some such place has that piece in stock?
What're the odds I can get the remaining half of it out of the fuel line? tips for doing this part greatly appreciated!!
What're the odds that even if Autozone has the right piece, my wife can manage to describe for them exactly what the piece is on her way home?

The only good thing: the tire is on the top of the mound, giving me a couple extra inches to work under the car.

i am not exactly sure which piece you are dealing with, but i can say that i repaired the gas line exiting my fuel tank (it corroded through and got a hole) with JB Weld. i cut it off, cleaned up the edges, and flared the tank side part. stuffed them together and gooped epoxy around the joint and let it dry

maybe you can glue it back together with epoxy, good luck

Take a picture with your phone and send it to hers with the year/make/model of your car

Yep because terms between cars might be the same but a different piece all together or draw it out

This piece?

Did you snap off the quick connector on the end of the fuel tube, or the end of the fuel filter?

Yep, that's the part (more or less)
The hard part will be getting the other piece out of the gas line. Of course, I can just get some metal gas line, cut the affected piece off, and splice in a few inches of line. I'll try avoiding that though.

A screw will work in getting it out of the gas line....just have to get it to bite into the plastic and you can get leverage.

Autozone should have it....if they don't have it in stock, they can probably order one in a few days. They also have that computer network that tells which stores have the parts...you might get lucky if you live in a big enough city.

Also, consider http://car-part.com

Search for your area and see if you can find a used one in a salvage yard. It's saved me a number of times.

A few years ago, right after I finished packing my vehicle to go on vacation, I discovered the source of the gas smell. The fuel line had rusted through in a section and suddenly, gas was spraying all over the ground when I was trying to turn the car on. Simple repair (except for cutting out the old section which ran between the two brake lines). So, of course, while working on it, my arms are soaked in gasoline and I'm laying on top of a puddle of gasoline on the ground. A relative who was temporarily living with us had been told "Do NOT leave your cigarette butts in our lawn any more." She didn't know what was up and didn't know I was under the pathfinder working on it. Flicked her cigarette butt which landed just a couple feet from me. Needless to say, I was a little freaked out by it.

Hey, here's another relevant question: How the heck do I get the new one onto the fuel line... It's about 30 degrees outside here; I can't think of a (safe) way to heat the line up to increase its flexibility.

Oh joy. They don't sell just the quick connect; it's an 18 inch section that connects to the line a little further down. I don't have to bother getting the piece out of the fuel line, nor do I have to worry about getting the new piece into the fuel line.

hair dryer, if you got one

jC

or hot water

I wouldn't want the gas fumes to be in contact with hot heating elements in a hair drier. Of course, the part I got was a straight section, not one with a 90 degree turn where it attaches. Thus, it was a pita to get it to fit "right". 10 minutes in boiling water while I managed to cut away the best spot to connect it. Got in the car, it started up within a couple seconds. Great. Within seconds, I managed to pull the part off while getting back onto the road. Oooops, it was so warm that it slid right off. No problem, slid back on. Then, I was stuck. Directions to wife: Pull forward *THAT* way (points). Wife realizes it's stuck, so she decides to back up first while I was walking to the back of the car to push it over the little hump. Yup, that pulled it back off half-way. It stayed running though, so I got it unstuck as gas sprayed out, and pulled it into a better location to re-fix it. It's in boiling water again.
