Temba, his arms wide!

I liked that episode. It also brings up the interesting idea that even if there were a "universal" translator, a language can still be indecipherable due to hidden contextual knowledge

My wife and I just watched this episode a few days ago.

Her just now while watching an episode: "Aw, that was such a nice planet. I hate that crystalline entity. He's such a fucking jackass. Why's he gotta go around and do that for?"

Seriously. Fuck the Crystalline Entity and its yellow laser beam of smiting.

What was that black goo thing that ate one of the crew members? That thing had personality.

Armus. I wouldn't mind an Armus vs Crystalline Entity battle-royale.

lol, I just watched this episode for the first time a week ago. Of course, I wondered how they would teach the language to children. How would they tell a story that explained that: Shaka, When the walls fell, meant failure if you had to use a metaphor for every idea? I still loved the episode though.

It probably made more sense in their native language. Remember, the universal translator only translates speech patterns. A metaphor in the native language might really be something more generic, like "Blah" = "Shaka, when the walls fell." Just like a child learns the word "No", if I were to teach my kid no by saying "I'm sorry Dave, but I can't let you do that" it would become associated by the local context to the words.

That was a good episode. Its funny though that the Aliens speak in metaphor, but they also speak in english.

I thought her appearance in Playboy did that.

Is that the episode where the special effects group screwed up and had the Enterprise's phaser shooting out of it's torpedo launcher?
