I was getting excited about age of conan, with it's city building and fighting style.

But Darkfall seems to have greater potential.

-You can build cities
-Capture cities
-Hire NPC guards
-Sail war/cargo/pirate ships
-Wage naval battles
-Become a pirate and raid player ships and settlements
-PvP anywhere, anytime. (it was mentioned on the site that there are "fair" penalties, i would assume this is like in EvE where you CAN attack anyone anywhere, but if your in a high security system the NPC cops will bust your @$$ hard)
-There is no level or class system for weapons and equipment, you can pick anything up when you first start (getting your hands of good stuff is another matter i would assume)
-FPS style fighting, no clicking a target to attack, you can jump to the side to dodge, you aim your spells, and you are 100% in control of your characters movements
-No classes, so if you want to go from alchemy to mining, you just start on that trade.
-10,000 people playing together.
-5 Races
-You can still play like you would in wow
-Or start your own craft making business complete with a building and NPC helpers.
-You can trade
-Almost everything is player made (like in EvE, but i would assume the real high end weapons you will still have to farm mobs)
-10,000 people per server will make for massive PvP battles. (i just hope they can avoid the lag issues EvE has with 500vs500 fleet battles, if not then that will kill a major part of darkfall)
-LOTS of mounts
-Fighting while on mounts
-No hovering names
-There is race specific magic and hundreds of spells
-Looks like stealth is more realistic (as in you stalk someone and strike them when they are not looking). A trailer mentioned that shiny armor will reduce your stealthiness.
-Player characters will show damage

That is just what i can recall off the top of my head.

This game doesn't need to become really popular, EvE only has 100k/200k subscriptions but it's in one server. This leads to interacting with more people then you ever could in wow because of their server limits. With 10,000 per server darkfall can seem like it has a massive number of people with under 50k (i say 50k rather then 10k because they will need to make money to keep going)

I do not pretend to know that it will "pwn all MMO's" or anything like that, but it looks like it has great promise. I suspect that it'll have a hard time beating the world look of Age of Conan as well as city creation, even with fighting and i have no idea how well they will have eliminated grinding (if i spend most of my time grinding, i will not play it) or how many people there will be in one server for Age of Conan. There is deal of similarities between the 2 games it would seem.

I just wish it set in a age beyond the sword (and musket).

I posted this because there doesn't seem to be any discussion on this game. I have limited experience with MMO's, 6 months in eve and 2 in wow. Grinding drove me out of both games. Also had a look at Pirates of the Burning Sea which my friend has.

It's release date is set at "2008", so i would assume that would now translate into late 2008 or early 2009.

So what are your impressions, have anything to add, what don't you like, what impresses you (if at all) and what do you really want to see/not see.

Err, well it's been a few months, does that cut me any slack?

@molondo

There are still instances, as i said you can still play it like wow in that regard if you so wish to, but as the trailer shows there are many other ways to play the game. I get the impression that is where the "uber" weapons come from.

Reading through the other 2 threads the 2 main worries that come up are "vaporware" and "they can't support the game when they release it".
-The release date is stated at 2008, and a dev journal details their current progress.
http://www.warcry.com/articles...rnal-21-Summary-Status
-EvE had similar issues with a small independent team. So may bugs, so little time (a bug that prevented freighter loot from being collected had been around for so long that when they fixed it, people thought they where changing the game rather then bug fixing). It can be a pain at time, but it will still be good unless they really drop the ball.

Hard to say. They don't really cover the death penalties much. They do have item decay, which is nice, but so did Star Wars Galaxies at first. If I can't loot my victim of his goods... it is going to have a hard time as a PVP game [cause it will be unreal tournament with a twist] when WoW can offer a much more stable environment with years of experience and development.

I think you can loot ppl you kill. There is a debate on the forums regarding if NPC's can loot your corpse and use your stuff.... nothing official but it could be interesting.

For the death penalties i would like to see whatever killed you being able to loot you. You can return and maybe your flask of ale is still there so if you had some sweet stuff looted, you'll have to track down that NPC/player.

Let the PvE'ers worry about their l33t gear, i'll be wearing whatever i can afford to lose (also a eve saying).

I don't see why it will not be released. It may have been in the works for a while now, but looking into it it seems they are almost ready for the open beta. The small size of company working on it does not deter me, EvE also started out with a small company in Iceland. And frankly, i don't care if the graphics aren't top of the line.

Or is there something i'm missing?

Let's put it like this. I registered on their website back in 2003 when it looked like an Open Beta was imminant.

I have to agree it's the Duke Nukem of MMO's.

It's basically Ultima Online 2. If it does come out, I'll hop on it in an instant.

I used to think so too, but UO had more to it than combat. It had a fully fleshed out social environment.

The UO team took the time to work out a "camping" skill and an "animal lore" skill and a "cooking" skill. They assumed when they were creating that game that a decent enough sized portion of their players would be interested in a skill that let's you assess the mood and strength of an animal or to bake objects that you could buy for a pittance. They turned out not to be entirely correct because people really ran with the PvP thing, but I want to play in a game where the designers have a grander vision than monster bashing and PvP and where they really committ to it to the extent that UO did.

This definitely looks interesting. I'm not into MMORPGs, but if this lives up to the hype, I might give it a go.

is this the game that charged people the full price of the game to get into beta and then just like disbanded the company or something or was that another game?

I was thinking UO meets Oblivion. Count me in... IF it comes out.

This sounds a lot like the ambition that Vanguard had... but alas it was released about a decade too early.

Rule of thumb for new MMO's: take the list of features it promises and cut in half. That's how many you'll have a year after release.

It looks interesting. But I for one can't wait to see The Elder Scrolls V. I still believe that Bethesda Software are the masters of "free" form exploration/RPG types of games.

It's basically the 2nd coming of Horizon's. Promise more than your shitty company can possibly develop, hype the hell out of it, disappear from the MMO scene multiple times with betas always being pushed back. You get psyched for this and congrats you just bought the hype.
