If it were really going to be the album of the decade they wouldn't have to tell us...

I was going to take offense to the term "generic metalcore," being a huge metalcore fan, but I wholeheartily agree with you. Nothing memorable at all from what I heard. That site reminded me that I have some of their songs on my computer so I'm giving them a spin right now. Same thing. Not bad, but nothing terribly exciting either.

If anything, Zao's Funeral of God was the album of the decade, at least as far as metalcore is concerned. And for pure metal, I think Opeth takes the cake for that.

a combination of metal and hardcore, duh. :p

Bands like Zao, Crutch, Spitfire, Focal Point, Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God (although people debate the last two). It's metal, but tends to have a bit more frantic pace and shouted/screamed lyrics. You should really check out Zao; they created the genre and kick copious amounts of ass.

One of the reasons I enjoy early Metallica so much is Het's voice -- I'm giving Zao a whirl now, though...

Anyone who wants some pure power metal needs to check out Dragonforce - Sonic Firestorm. MY personal album of the decade.

Hmm, perhaps you're right. But they definitely made it popular. And they've been around for a while. I can't think of any metalcore band that's been around longer, which is why I said that. I mean, when they first formed with Shawn Jonas as the vocalist, that must have been in the early 90s, and they were definitely the forefront on the genre, in my mind at least.

The Zao songs I've heard so far sound like they're sung by Zerg, somewhat entertaining for a while, I guess.
