Live at Pompeii is also supposed to be released in dvd this month but I'm still trying to find someplace that even has it listed. I consider this a must have video for every Pink Floyd fan.

The big music companies are loving this. They sell the same music on LP, cassette, CD, SACD and DVD and only have to pay for the production once. You'll see the industry pushing this new format stuff hard, it's hugely profitable for them.

SACD is not about multichannel if you don't want it to be. Some people go out and get 5.1 setups, personally I am 2-channel all the way.

BTW, I hate Sony too, but with the release of SACD by Sony/Phillips they've gone out and done a good thing. I like to weigh the merits of individual technologies as oppossed to blacklisting a company altogether. I hate M$, but I have an Xbox.

Can you copy SACDs?

As mentioned here, you can copy the CD layer as we have been able to in the past. The Hi-Rez SACD audio can only be copied via analog outputs.

Ridefree:

There's nothing stopping you from buying this especially because it is cheaper than the old harvest CD of DSOTM. For someone without an SACD player it is the CD. In addition the restoration work that has gone into this release makes it a superior CD version in any case. As for the SACD program material if and when you want to buy an SACD player you can listen to it in hi-resolution 2 channel or hi-resolution 5.1 channel.

Freejack:

There is no SACD mode on a computer CD-ROM drive, your drive will play the disc as a regular CD and a good sounding one at that.

Infos:

DSOTM is not really one of the first picks, before DSTOM came the Rolling Stones remasters, and then The Police remasters. Next up is the Peter Gabriel remasters. Before all of the hybrid remasters targeted at the mass market were SACD releases since 1999, which were mostly single layer discs. Again there is nothing stopping you from using the disc in any CD/DVD player of your choice - there is no trick here. If you don't want to buy an SACD player nobody will twist your arm.

Mwawg:

Well, CD has been around for over 20+ years now, and many people even from the beginning felt that it really didn't much other than add convenience which was welcome in any case, but it failed to increase the fidelity of sound that consumers were getting. Yes, it took out pops, and hisses and it sounded clean. It had good numbers like S/N, dynamic range, frequency response etc, but it also added a harsh, mechanical edge to the sound. If you listen especially to an older CD on an older CD player you will see how even a natural accoustic guitar can sound like a machine is creating the sound. Recent CDs and CD players are much better than players built even 2-3 years ago. The SCD-ce755 is a prime example, you just couldn't get a player at its price point that sounds so good playing CDs a year before it was made. Yet a CD playing on the SCD-ce755 still cannot touch an SACD playing on the same player. Just in data terms there is 4 times as data capturing the music signal. The impluse response of the signal at the 2.8 Mhz sampling rate (64 times CD sampling rate of 44.1 Khz) is outstanding and it really shows. It is about time we got a new format - the improvement of sound recording and distribution technology is the natural thing to happen. It has always been that way and I hope it will be that way in the future - I'd hate to see people primarily using regular CDs 60 years from now because they felt that CD was "good enough."

At this price there is no reason not to get it - I bought the Harvest CD last year for $16.99 and this is cheaper and better even as a CD with the added bonus of even better sound for those who want to invest in an SACD player. This being a hybrid SACD does not detract from the fact that it a fine sounding release of DSOTM as a regular CD.

Sony sent me some SACD samples and I am really impressed by it. Damn, Celine Dion sounded great on SACD.
