Damn. Sorry to hear Pink Floyd choose SACD. I was hoping they would choose DVD-Audio, since that's what I already have.

Someone did that last year and there are vcd and svcd versions floating around. There's even a version with subtitles on wizard of oz turned on so you can see when dialoque synced with the music.
 
Yes, oslama, SACD can be played on regular CD players, but you won't hear the 5.1 channels, of course. Still, some people say that even on a regular CD player it sounds better than the regular CD.
 
not ALL SACDs can be played on CD players. in fact most can't. only recently has the new SACDs become hybrid - where they have both the SACD track and the regular CD audio track like the Police 25th anniversary SACD. this is a trend sony continues to promote in hopes of advancing SACDs. i think it's great...probably b/c i can play SACDs 😉

Thanks for this post! This is one of my all-time favorite albums. Until "Thriller" I believe it was the best selling of all time. In any event, I am really looking forward to receiving it - I bought mine at Deep Discount CD.......overall, I find that their prices with always free shipping the best overall. Just my .02 cents!
 
All the Rolling Stones reissues except "40 Licks" are hybrid SACDs, Every Breath You Take is also a hybrid SACD the other Police reissues are available in either regular CD or SACD only (single layer).

The ones that only play in SACD players are called single layer SACDs, because they basically have a DVD-density data surface for SACD. The hybrids have a translucent DVD-density data layer for SACD data, and a good old fashioned CD data layer on the substrate. A regular CD player just ignores the translucent SACD layer and plays the CD layer like a regular CD, and SACD player will let you choose between the two layers. It is to your advantage to listen to the SACD layer, if your player can.

Oftentimes a CD layer on an SACD will sound better than a previously released CD of the same material since more care is taken to produce SACDs. The older analog recordings (ex: Pink Floyd, Police, Rolling Stones etc.) are captured in SACD format (Direct Stream Digital - DSD) and then converted to regular CD resolution using a technique called Super Bit Mapping Direct which yields sonic advantages. Even the regular CDs that are not hybrids but are released along with single layer SACD versions are likely to be superior as they have been produced via DSD recording and Super Bit Mapping Direct (ex: Non-Every Breath You Take Police reissues such as Synchronicity on regular CD).

I hear ya. This Super Audio CD thing looks cool(haven't heard it yet so can't say sounds cool). Soooo, where's the hot deal on a SACD player?

They used to cheaper when they closing out the first generation SCD-ce775 models and the DVD/SACD DVP-ns650 or DVP-ns500V players for less than $160 near the end. But it's not that bad even now with the new DVP-ns755V DVD/SACD player for $208 at www.BHphotovideo.com .(This price was alerted by another member in the Police SACD thread). Just type in "SACD" and you will find a couple of choices.

Also, keep in mind that Pioneer, Yamaha, Kenwood, Teac, Marantz, Denon and Onkyo make SACD players. Other higher-end brands like Classe, Musical Fidelity, Lexicon, Meitner, Accuphase, Krell and a couple of others also make SACD players. The lowest cost of entry is the Sony mentioned above.
 
Thanks... I'm a big fan of DTS. I think it sounds great. I've heard the hype about SACD... And all the audio buffs say it is way better then DTS. I dunno. I doubt you'll be seeing the ROM SACD chips included in a DVD player any time soon. Yeah, they are there but, I am talking about the <100.00 DVD player. I wonder how much SONY wants for the ROM CHIPS? I am not very fond of SONY, but I know some other company went in with them on this too. I bought this since one day you'll be able to buy a cheap CD player that has SACD built in.

Doesn't SACD support 6.1? Another waste of money... 2 me the average Joe isn't going to be buying 6 speakers. I don't even have the floor space for 4. I guess this will never end as long as these rich people keep buying and supporting this crap.
 
Ericlp, I think your dislike of Sony may have skewed your views a bit on the SACD issue.

No it doesn't, SACD does support 5.1. It was DTS that invented the 6.1 stuff (DTS-ES) for those super rich folks. SACD was originally released as a 2 channel stereo format, and there is always a great 2 channel mix on all SACD disks. There is 5.1 on many of them to, for the millions and millions of poor folks who have invested in a surround 5.1 sound system for their DTS and Dolby digital video systems and want to use all of their speakers.

Wait 6 months, if that long, and you will see SACD players at or close to $100. As has already been pointed out there are several of them at the $200 mark now, and Apex will be weighing in soon.

One great benefit of SACD over DTS (or DVD-Audio) for music is its compatibility with regular CD players. Nearly all SACDs released now are dual layer, so you only have to buy one copy of Dark Side of the moon, and it will play on your car CD player, and your Diskman. Not true of your DTS music disks. Another amazing benefit is that Sony is so interested in making this format work, that most new disks cost exactly the same as the CD only version. After you buy a few of those expensive DTS music disks that won't play on your car system and that you cannot copy any cost difference between a $100 DVD player and a $200 SACD DVD player gets lost.
 
You can copy the CD layer of an SACD with a CD burner just like a regular CD. You cannot, so far as I can tell, copy the DVD based SACD layer.
 
SACD is an uncompressed format. DTS is compressed. That alone makes SACD better than DTS.

SACD is much better than DTS/AC3. As for SACD vs DVD-A, it varies.

I'm happy to say that I really like my Sony SCD-CE775 SACD player

The one to look at now is the XE670.

Personally, I'm still waiting for P.U.L.S.E. to come out on DVD. They did the Wall, Pulse was supposed to come but got delayed. That's one video that's seriously crying out for a high bitrate DVD treatment. I've got it on an imported VCD, but the quality leaves a lot to be desired. With all the lights and stuff, it's got some serious compression artifacts, not to mention I'd love the higher quality sound too. :-(

 
I want so much to get this, but for me it would mean buying into Sony's schtick. I have worn out numerous vinyl DSMs and numerous casette tapes from when I would buy the new album, clean it & tape it and then, when the tape wore out, spin the vinyl one more time to create another tape.
It was a big relief when the CD came out and I stopped wearing-out the recordings.
The other day, a new problem surfaced. I went to give a listen to DSM and all three of my CDs were gone. Stolen by my boys when they moved out!
Now comes another dilemma...
...buy this and the SA unit?, or another CD & hide it this time?

As we all know the whole recording industry blows big chunks and reluctance
to divert funds to their scams is at the bottom of my list.
