Judging by the two previous films by Nolan. I'd expect a criminal mastermind. Nolan imo has hit the ball out of the park with the first two movies(especially dark night). He explores the dark minds of the villan. The joker could had been a prank playing fool like he was originally portrayed in the tv series. Instead he was a sociopath who viewed crime as a game between good and bad. Killed, maimed, and threatened to see the reaction of law abiding citizens(including batman).
