I myself am a dark beer drinker.
Love my Killians, Amber Bock, Molson XXX.

Sorry just started this thread because I bought some ESB Red Hook Amber Ale because it was discontinued at my Kroger. Actually got to thinking how many people just drink beer to get drunk, and how many people drink beer to enjoy the flavor?

Also added a poll for all the non-beer drinkers

Both really. The only Light beer I don't really care for is the low calorie crap. I drink for the taste. I can't drink a beer that I don't think tastes good. I have a can of Genesse Light in the fridge, god awful crap. It's like beer flavored water.

Dark beer.

But....errr....you ain't no dark beer drinker, there, bud!

Try Guinness! Or, if you've got a local brewpub (brewery, whatever you call them), ask if they have any porters or stouts on tap.

Now, THOSE are dark beers! (And, of course, the elixir of the gods!)

Killians and Amber bock aren't dark. Grab an oatmeal stout or an Imperial stout. Now THOSE are dark.

As for what I prefer? That depends on mood, temperature, and what I'm doing at the time. I much prefer having something like a Coors or an MGD when it's 100 degrees out and I'm grilling burgers. But, if I'm inside having steak or just want to relax after a long day and it isn't blistering hot, then a nice smooth porter or stout is heavenly.

There's a time and place for different types of beers.

Try Newcastle. It's the mildest "dark" I've found so far... :)

I just recently started drinking dark beers. I was intimidated by them for the longest time and I didn't want to order one and not like it, but I finally tried some at a brewpub by my house and, to my surprise, actually enjoyed it. I prefer sweeter beers to bitter, but I haven't really settled on any particular type yet. Previous to that, I mainly stuck to ambers, but now I've decided that I don't really care for their flavor.

Terminator Stout

Black as the darkest night, rich as the most decadent dessert, Terminator is for the true stout lover. This is a full bodied and flavor packed ale which draws it's robust complexity from kiln-baked specialty grains. Look for a wide array of toasted, chocolate, nutty and coffee-like flavors in every pint! The devoted swear by it, and it remains one of our top selling ales year after year.

Malts: Pale Malt; Munich Malt; 40L Crystal; Black Barley

Hops: Cascades

Specifications: Original Gravity: 1.065; Terminal Gravity: 1.015; Alcohol by Volume: 5.1%

Calories/pint: 282

Porters are generally not as bitter as stouts.

You could try Guinness though, a LOT of pubs stock it (well, anything calling itself a 'pub' in the US will - it's an Irish beer, your luck at other bars will vary, though). Anyway, it's a stout, but a VERY mild one. Almost no bitter taste at all. Make sure it's on tap, though. Guiness doesn't bottle very well.

Actually, my sister in law refers to it as a 'beer milkshake', and that's about right. Tastes like a beer, just as thick as a milkshake - heh.

As to 'type'....

Well, like noted above by a couple people, it depends on the mood.

For a nice steak dinner, some great seafood, Thai, etc - wine. Sorry, beers just don't do it justice.

For a 'quickie' steak dinner (steakhouse fare, Fridays, Chilis, etc), or ANY kind of sandwich for dinner (partial to French Dips or Cheesesteaks)...Guiness, it is!

For Mexican, or a blistering day with hot dogs or burgers...I like 'em light. Sorry, no MGD or Coors for me, though (like drinking water, really, how do you do that?).

Corona and Dos Equis (Dox Equis....*mmmm*....) are both VERY good light beers. Killians is amber-ish and isn't bad. Corona you need the lime for.

But, Coors/MGD/Bud....bleh. Not even at sporting events, sorry!

Terminator Stout

Heh, one of our local brewing companies had a 'Darth Porter' as a seasonal beer. Hehe.

Actually, that reminds me. A local spicey burrito/alternative hangout joint here (serves mostly wraps with SPICEY spices, kinda Mongolian themed) has something they call "The Wrap of Kahn". Hehehe.

Guinness is specifically what intimidated me originally. ;) I still haven't tried it, but next time I see it on tap, I'll give it a shot. I did try one called Hair of the Dog (which the bartender said was 11.5% alky, heh) that felt very dense (for the lack of a better term). Another bartender likened it to drinking a loaf of bread. ;)

Lwts see... today/tonight I had:
Arrogant Bastard Ale
Terrible (I forget the maker, but it is 10.5%), a very dark ale
Guinness
Sammy Smith's Imperial Stout

and (though not a beer) Laphroiag.

None of those are exactly a "light" drink.

leinies honey is a VERY good beer, but it's not a "flavored beer" - its just honey brewed
flavored beers are the smirnoff ices and stuff like that

my favorite is leinenkugel red :)

i like all types of beers, even some of the popular american domestics
my favorite stout is Black Hawk Stout - link
my fridge is always stocked with leinenkugels red or honey as well as miller lite (for weekday drinking and cooking)

btw, guiness tastes great out of cans and bottles nowadays, their draught system is great
it's still better on tap, but it's great out of a can/bottle too as long as you follow the directions and pour it into a glass right away
