Dapper on an AMD Opteron system

What would you recommend? I know the i386 version will run but I would assume the AMD64 version is better optimized for my CPU. Are there any drawbacks to running the AMD64 version though?

Yes, non-free 32-bit things like flash, w32codecs, etc won't work on a 64-bit system. It's possible to get them to work if you run a 32-bit browser, video player, etc but it's not exactly easy to setup right now AFAIK.

Doesn't AMD64 stick all 64-bit libraries in /usr/lib64 and maintain backwards compatiblity by placing 32-bit ones in /usr/lib?

I use Opera x86_64, and whatever Flash I downloaded off macromedia.com for "Linux", works for me.

Depends on the distribution, AFAIK they don't all handle it exactly the same.

If you're using a 64-bit Opera then you have to use a 64-bit flash, there's no question about that. Unless Adobe released a 64-bit version of the plugin or something I can't explain why it would work, none of my 64-bit systems have X on them.

This is my main desktop system and I'm planning to use it for general web browsing, Email, etc so I want the codec and browser support included. i386 it is then. Thanks for the replies! 🙂
