So I was looking at the 5D... I can probably get it for $1800 after rebates. I can get a 30D for $900 after rebates.

Been looking at the reviews. The 5D and 30D both have the same dynamic range (shocked me) and almost the same amount of ISO noise

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos30d/page20.asp

The 5D

Pros:

Slightly better high ISO
LARGE viewfinder
Higher resolution, more detailed photos

Cons:

Twice as expensive
Will need to purchase more lenses for full frame. New lenses must also be very high quality.
No more Dynamic Range than 30D
If purchased, cannot sell my XT because I'd still need it for telephotos.

The 30D

Pros:

Cheaper by $900
If purchased, can sell my XT.
Same (even wider) Dynamic Range than 5D
Excellent high-ISO noise
Same sensor as the old 20D <- huh?!?!
Can keep all my current lenses, won't have to buy new ones
Blazing fast 5 fps
On-board flash can be used as a AF Assist Lamp

Cons:

Smaller viewfinder
Lower resolution, photos will not be as detailed, less cropping room

GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

photos from the 30D will be more detailed after you crop the 5D to get the same picture.

Can you wait and see what comes available soon - like a 40D (replacement for 30D)?

I just bought a 30D because my 300D crapped out on us and so far I am very impressed with its capabilities but I've only had it for two days so far. If the 300D didn't crap out I would have waited for the 30D replacement

I wish I could wait, but the Canon Double rebates only last until Jan 13, and I can get a 5D from Dell for $1800, but the deal ends tomorrow morning, plus I'm going on an overseas trip at the start of summer, and I want to upgrade by then.

I wouldn't bother right now. I have a 20D...and honestly I'm perfectly happy with the crop factor. It allows me to carry less or lighter glass to cover the same range. Sure I'd like a higher megapixel camera...10-12MP would be great, but I'll wait till the 40D or whatever that will provide this.

The 30D viewfinder is pretty goddamn big too. I mean going from the XT to the 30D viewfinder is like night and day.

I say get the 30D and a lens like the 85mm f/1.8.

And while you're overseas pick me up a cute little Oly E-400.

Digital SLRs are getting cheaper every year. I think I will wait a year or two before I upgrade my 350D which I never really liked.

Alright, I'm going with the 30D + battery grip + some other thing to fulfill that double rebate requirement, maybe the 85mm. I was even looking at the 1DMKII, but 1.3x crop is just too weird. It's not FF but I'd still have to replace all my APS-C lenses with FF to avoid vignetting.

I kinda wish I woulda gone with the 20D in the first place. If I had I bet I wouldn't be spending the extra money on a 30D I am now :(

From what I've read the image quality difference between 8MP and 10MP is miniscule.

Also, the 30D has a much larger viewfinder than the XT/XTi so it will definitely be an improvement.

I love my 30D, but personally I don't think you'd see much difference in your pics by going with this upgrade. Unless you can sell your existing camera it may not even be worth the hassle.

You know, on another note, Olympus is so weird. My first digicam was a 4MP Oly C-750 super zoom, and I kept waiting for the next upgrade, the 5MP or the 6MP or a longer zoom. What did they do? They kept the same specs, but just made it smaller. Then their next upgrade was keeping the same size and specs, but adding better video. By this time I was really sad :(

I guess Olympus has a thing for small cameras and trying to pack as much into them as possible.

The 5D is 12.8MP, not 10MP. It's a pretty good jump that shows in the pictures.

As for the upgrade, I'm doing it primarily because I hate my XT's viewfinder and horrible autofocus.

You're right. I was thinking of the difference between the XTi and the 30D.

The viewfinder is one of the main reasons I bought the 30D. My 300D was horribly small and damned near impossible to focus in low light manually. I also wanted the fast startup times and higher fps so for me it was a no brainer which camera to buy.

It's the smallest dslr on the market, but it is actually ergonomically designed.

10 MP, better viewfinder than the E-500, better ISO noise levels. The kit lens has ED elements. Looks like a promising camera, but not available in the US.

EDIT: Here are some good images of it's size...

yeah, it's so sad. I picked up a 30D at best buy that actually had a lens attached for once. My jaw fell because of how bad the 300D's viewfinder is in comparison. The 5D had a lens too... I took one look and tears started to build up. heh

I am glad someone agrees with me. I have had an XT since they came out almost two years ago. I have hated the viewfinder since day 1. I didn't care too much at first because I figured all DSLRs had crappy viewfinder because of their crop factors. Later Best Buy started displaying the 30D ( yeah, like a year later) and the Nikon DSLRs. Boy was I surprised. The difference is huge. From that point on I hated my XT even more.

A lot of people seem to not care about it and think the Rebels are fine but for me, the viewfinder is amoung the most important parts of an SLR. I can't see how people can see past this issue and still recommend one. From my comparisons, Nikon camera still have better viewfinders but at least the 30D has a much bigger one than the XT. The Nikon ones are brighter and make things easier to focus on.
