Anybody else ever started pulling their hair out trying to pick out a new mattress? I want to get one for my new aprtment, and I figured I'd have a little trouble, but not this much. It would help tremendoutsly if mattresses fromt the same manufacturer used the same names at diffrent retailers  Any suggestions? I'm looking for a good, queen-sized matress; something middle-of-the-road in terms of softness - not stiff board, but not a super-soft pillow, either. Price range is anything up to about $1k, maybe a *little* more.

I picked mine out by laying on it and seeing which one felt comfortable in the store.. that's always worked for me. Mine was a queen size, pillow top mattress. Got it marked down to $650 because I only wanted a double for my apartment but they were completely out of stock (this was around move in day for college).

I've done that myself, of course. Quite a few of them feel pretty comfortable, though.

Unfortunately, each mattress place can have a custom name put on what is basically the same mattress as his competition, without changing any of the components, OR, they can have several things customized in little or big ways. Makes it damn hard to comparison or price shop. Definitley climb on the mattress and try it out in the usual sleeping positions you use. NO, having sex is not usually allowed on the test mattress...
Keep in mind, that all mattresses will eventually form to fit your body some. OK, maybe youse tiny people don't even make a dent, but us "full grown" folks sure do...
This is KIND OF yet another place where you get what you pay for, BUT, you gotta shop wisely, because it's also another place where you can get screwed badly. If you're married or live with a "significant other", be sure to take him/her along, because it has to be comfortable for both...
There's a place in the SF bay area (Berzerkely) that custom makes some of the most comfortable mattresses I've ever seen, but they are spendy! (european sleep works) size was $2000...just a bit more than I wanted to spend, but I've regretted being so cheap a few times. (only spent $1400 on a Cal King) Still a decent mattress, but no where near as comfortable, nor as well built.

unfortunately, that's way too much money at this point, and neither the place I live now nor the place I'm moving to are any where near SF. Or any part of California, for that matter :p

i hate how the names change from store to store...it keeps the prices F'ed up since there is no way to compare. that has to be against a law or something.

Sealy Posturpedic at Costco. It'll cost you ~$530 since they don't have a coupon on it right now.

How much does a Costco membership cost? I'd only be using it for this, most likely - I'm moving into the heart of Walmart / Sams Club country :p

Or similar at Sam's Club.

It's worth the price of membership.

You can always just get a decent, not uber, comfortable bed then spend around $150 for a 2-inch memory foam topper. VERY comfortable.

$45. But as the poster below you said, apparantly Sam's has mattresses too. We're very happy with ours, but matress preferences vary fwiw.
