Dang you MS for region locking your 360

I'm so close to purchasing a 360, but this region locking is really turning me off. I live back and fourth between the US and Australia. So i guess I'll just have to stick with PS3 for now.

Yet alone if it breaks as I hear they are prone to, last thing I want to do is have to ship the dang thing across the world to get fixed.

Sorry, but just wanted to vent my frustration as there are games for 360 I really want to play but can't because I don't want to have to deal with importing games all the time! ACK!

I know. It was one if it's largest selling points for me. But its lacking attention at the moment since I've played through everything I've wanted to so far.

Most Asian versions of the games have english options and are region free. Check Play-Asia and see the list, maybe it's good enough to get your top games region free

360 games are locked are at the discretion of the publisher not by default.

Nope, just bring both 360s when he moves back and forth. Play the US games on the US 360 and the Australian games on the Australian 360 regardless of which country he's actually in.

Obviously this is not a great solution.

Nope, just bring both 360s when he moves back and forth. Play the US games on the US 360 and the Australian games on the Australian 360 regardless of which country he's actually in.

Obviously this is not a great solution.

PAL/NTSC, unless the xbox does them both...

regardless what console you own, don't you think lugging around a PS3/Xbox360 half-way across the globe is a good idea?
If I were you, I'd buy a PS3 and leave it in OZ - buy an Xbox360 and leave it in the US.

No lugging around heavy stuff on flights longer than 10hrs for me.

It sounds like a tough chore, but I've done it before, as long as I pack right. Once you get past the hassle of security, then you just chuck it in the overhead bin, drinks however many beers it takes you to pass out then carry it back out before you leave the plane.

But yeah carrying two consoles seems over the top. Then again you wouldn't believe the amount of crap I've managed to travel with before. And for the few moments that you have to lug around 50-60 kilos of luggage it's not so bad, especially since those little smart carts are free for international travel.

How open is the PS3? Is it like the PSP where it's region free for games, but region locked for Blu-Ray? What about PS2/PS1 compatibility, is that region free too assuming you have a BC unit?

The PS3 has the same region locking as any other device that plays the same media.

So (as far as I know) -
DVDs - region locked
Blu-ray - region locked
PS1 - region locked
PS2 - region locked
PS3 games - NOT region locked

I see, movies aren't a big deal to me but support for import PS2/PS1 games would've been something that definitely would've tipped the scales in favor of the PS3 for me.

So what determines a region lock, is it the media itself, the hardware, or a combination of both?

FWIW there is a website that lists which versions of each game on 360 are region-free. Maybe not all, but a good portion of the games are if you're willing to buy from different regions (US, UK, Jap).
