Dancing classes...

Okay here's the deal... I have been, for the longest time, deathly afraid of 'boogyin down' in public. I feel like a mongoloid on crack -- it's very awkward.

Now, I figured if I took dancing lessons I would probably loosen up, but what type of dancing lessons? I figure I would be using it in a 'club' environment, so what type should I look for? Past girlfriends were never happy that I didn't dance... I figure I might as well remedy that 🙂

Thanks for any advice! 🙂

*nod*

I just figured something that would at least give me some type of musical sense so I could learn.

Not very many at least.

I'd just take some lessons in salsa and merengue. If you can dance those, you can look just fine in any club. Just tell the instructor what you are interested in. Latin dances in clubs are ~80% just feet dancing while in dance studios initial lessons tend to be ~80% arms and bodies. But there is that ~20% overlap. They can teach solely the feet portion and you'll be set.

take a hip hop class. that will be the closest to club dancing.
You can take a hip hop class at any dance studio for not too much money. They have beginners dance classes too.

How hard is it to pick up... especially for somebody who is totally retarded when it comes to this stuff? I am not going with a 'partner' ... so how does that work exactly?

if you are going with a partner, it will just be like any other dance class... just stand next to each other.

If you have a partner in the way of a dancing partner, i would try a basic latin dance class because that gives you rythm and time with a partner as well

it is easy to pick up especially since there are classes for beginners.

I had 3 left feet when I started. It can be a lot of fun. Some people pick it up quickly, others struggle quite a lot. Those who struggle most are those who are over 40 when they start. Younger learners whos minds are accustomed to learning (school, college) tend to have very little trouble. An interesting issue is whether the dance student is in engineering (or related fields). These people tend to pick up the basics the fastest yet forever struggle past the basics. The analytical mind makes them overthink. I fall into that category.

I'd take group classes if I were you. They are cheap, and no partner is needed. Plenty of couples and singles will be there and partners are swapped every few minutes. You'll dance with both the single and married women in the lesson.

So update... I now have a class scheduled for Thursday of next week. It's a free lesson to start, and then they work out a schedule for what I'm comfortable.
