Damon out as Jason Bourne...

Four years ago, Jeremy Renner was playing second-fiddle to Minnie Driver in critically reviled movies. (And starring in canceled television series.) Then he made a little movie called "The Hurt Locker." Since then, he has been nominated for two Oscars, been cast as a superhero and is anchoring two of the most valuable action franchises on earth. We'd say making "Locker" was a smart career move.

Last night, Deadline announced the news everyone had been waiting for: The role of the superspy character replacing Matt Damon's Jason Bourne in the "Bourne" franchise has been offered to Renner, who's expected to join on as soon as scheduling issues are resolved. Universal had been looking at several other actors -- including "Animal Kingdom"'s Joel Edgerton and Garrett Hedlund from "Tron: Legacy" -- but they landed on Renner for "The Bourne Legacy." "Legacy" is written and directed by Tony Gilroy (who wrote all three of the "Bourne" screenplays and also wrote and directed "Michael Clayton") and is expected to start filming this September, with a release date around August 2012.

Renner, who, again, was unknown only three years ago, is taking on projects like a starving man suddenly put in front of a buffet. (Even though he's new to the scene, he has been around a long time; he turns 40 this year.) He just finished filming "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" with Tom Cruise -- it is anticipated that he will take over that franchise, though he's actually only nine years younger than Cruise -- and he also will play "Hawkeye" in the upcoming "Avengers movie." (He's said to have a cameo as Hawkeye in this summer's "Thor" as well.)

Finding the right actor was key for Universal to keep the "Bourne" franchise alive. When director Paul Greengrass announced he was done with the "Bourne" films, star Matt Damon said he would leave the franchise too, claiming he would only work with Greengrass. (He has since left the door ajar for "five years from now.") Universal couldn't let such a profitable franchise die, though, so they gave Gilroy the director's chair and set about casting a new lead, someone who is not Jason Bourne, but is certainly cut from his proverbial cloth. That person was Renner. Hence the "Legacy" of the title: The hope is that someday Damon and Renner can team for a future Super Bourne Film. (The legacy aspect is still strange, though; Damon is just one year older than Renner.)

But yes: We have gone from never having heard of Jeremy Renner to having him take over all aspects of entertainment, in three years. Look out: Someone's gonna cast him as Batman next.

Well, good for him. He was a highlight of 'The Town', which I greatly enjoyed. I could see him fitting into the Bourne universe pretty well, hopefully the movie doesn't suck.

A film has to have a good director to have a shot really, and if 'Micheal Clayton' is any clue, I think it could really be excellent.

It's a shame that the original novelist of the Bourne series is long dead. I've never bothered reading any of the sequels by that other author, but I'm relatively cynical from my experience reading some of the garbage that's been put out under the 'Tom Clancy' branding.

That could work with him. I was pissed when I heard that Matt Damon wasn't going to do another Bourne. It won't be the same without Damon and Greengrass, but I'm still glad that a new Bourne movie willl be coming out next year.

I didn't know that Renner did a MI with Cruise. That should be sweet too. MI 3 was great.

That's all we hear around her in the past couple of years. YES, he's a local boy...yes, the city is proud of him...I GET that, but for fuck sake...it doesn't need to be a constant reminder...How about a little Timothy Olyphant love once in a while? He's also a local boy made good...

IF Gilroy is directing, then it could be the best one, yet. His screenplays were great, but he was always pissed about what happened to the Bourne films--and rightly so. 2 and 3 were pretty damn shitty and dumb.

Hurt Locker was awesome--so is Renner. could be quite good with these two.

damn, I like Olyphant.

I agree, he could use more love. Poor bastard needs more nominations, I guess? :\

You should write an op-ed to the local rag, BoomerD.

Damn that sucks. Matt Damon was perfect as Jason Bourne. Loved the movies because of him. And I always hated Renner (just like I hated Hurt Locker).

Dont know if it says it in that article cause i didnt read it but, hes not taking over Jason Bourne hes going to be playing another character that the movie will focus on. However it will be related to Jason Bourne.

ahh.. Bourne Legacy finally realized!
the 4th movie in the Bourne Trilogy is finally here!

Olyphant did 'Hitman', and everyone involved in that mess should take about 7 years off 😛 What a pile. Not Olyphant's fault though.

Could be pretty good. Harrison Ford wasn't the first Jack Ryan and that turned out to be just fine.

Actually, my favorite Jack Ryan to date.

How fucking many James Bonds have we had so far?

Sean Connery
David Niven
George Lazenby
Roger Moore
Timothy Dalton
Pierce Brosnan
Daniel Craig

How many Bond movies have there been?

26...23 official, 3 others

How many Bond novels did Ian Fleming write?
12 plus a couple of collections of short stories.

Once Hollywood finds a winner, they beat it into the ground.
(I do like Craig as Bond though. MUCH different approach to the character than anyone else has ever used.)

But the best Clark/Kelly was Liev Schrieber.
