well.. im not really worried about advancement.. i just dont wanna have my daily job to be the toilet cleaner for 4 years.. now granted i might get that, but im guessing i'd test good and get into the tech schools and do just fine... also, im not really scared of ground combat.. there is a small possability of being a federal agent for career choice.. air force veteren + 4 year comp sci degree will look good if i wanna do comp sci for the FBI or ATF... just keepin doors open... heck.. i wouldnt mind bein a ground force at all.... im just planning on using the technical training in my career.. whatever it may be

bob- When you want the real scoop on what it is like being an enlisted man in the Navy just ask I'll tell you. But whatever you do don't just take the opinion of someone who 1.only has about two weeks in the service 2. never spent a day in his life in the Navy because they wouldn't take him and 3. who is such a professional he feels it is OK to rip the other services in public based on his years of experience. That's all OK though, I'm sure he's a fine officer and I'm positive the Air Force is lucky to have him

If you are 6'8", you had better stay far away from the navy. They don't have beds for people 6'8". Geez, unless you are an officer, youwould be sleeping on a ship with bunks stacked 6 high, and your bunk mates butt would be resting on your belly. Just take a tour of a aircraft carrier to see what I mean. And all else in the navy is just smaller and more compact than that.

At 6'8" join the Air Force. Better food, better duty, and if you care to check it,the last three confilicts the US has been in has been dominated by Air superiority. OURS!

If you where a ground pounder, Marines or Army, you would have c rats (meals ready to eat) eaten cold or over tasty sterno. And you my friend would need to dig your foxhole much deeper than your counterparts. Thats more work for you. (that is purely in jest.😉)

Air Force will serve your needs well. Be proud and fly high. Best meal in the Air Force is midnight chow at the flightline. Pilots get steak and eggs and good food all the time.

<<Air Force will serve your needs well. Be proud and fly high. Best meal in the Air Force is midnight chow >>

Ill second that. (Am I agreeing with Tripleshot on something?) 🙂

well.. im not really worried about advancement..

If four years is all you want, I'd seriously consider the Air Force if I were you. The huge obstacles in AF advancement are E-5 and E-6, but those only occur after a four year stint. However, with the Navy, you would travel a great deal more, if that's what you want (well, you could very easily see the desert with USAF!).

Hit a nerve, Dave? Some people can't take hyperbole, now can they?

You can make all the assumptions you want about what I've seen and know, but you are wrong in the vast majority of them. Further, if you want to publicly insult an officer, perhaps you can let me know your duty station so I can talk to the JAG there. UCMJ applies here whether you like it or not, and for all the talk of professionalism, you show little.

<< Ok.. so i've been really pissy lately.. im thinkin about enlisting in one service or another soon... i need my ass kicked in so that my life now seems like a breeze.. im trying to think of the best way to enlist and get educated where i want... >>

Do it man! I regret not going into the armed forces🙁 I'll be a dreamer while you actually do something that is commendable.

Andrewr-

Good post

Dave Sohmer-

Cant keep it public? Why not?

Any good salesman/manager knows he never talks down an opponent or competition.

Hey andrewR leave your rank at the door.

I served 10 years as AF SP got out in 1997 as an E-5. The worst shift leaders we had were the ones who threw around their rank and hid behind the UCMJ. One thing i have noticed about officers is that they have a very thin skin to critizism. You want to talk about professionalism? You should not threaten an enlisted man with courts martial in public either. :|:|

<<I served 10 years as and AF SP got out 1997 as an E-5. >>

Only E-5 in 10 years? Not putting down your service but many APs and Cooks did better.

yip AF is hard to get promoted in, E-5 and E-6 are very tough. it depends on your career field and how many slots the AF needs to fill in the rank your getting promoted to. If they dont need many E-5... they raise the overall cutoff hence fewer promotions.

the average for a cop in the air force to make E-5 is 6 years, i did it in 5.

the average for a cop in the air foce to make E-6 is 9 years. i missed making Tech sergeant by 1/2 a point before i got out.

Cytrix-

Well, name your career field. I was in an EWQ 2% promotion rate field (Exceptionally well qualified and then only 2% made it) and I made e-4 under 4. Saw a lot of good guys get out with only e-3 ratings.

Please understand, I am not putting you down but I just dont agree with some of the things you have stated.

Cytrix-

Maybe I am biased because of this-

Saw a lot of 1 stripe APs make 2 and then 3 sitting in a warm truck while we were freezing our butts off and doing construction type labor.

I was a 811X0 then our career field changed to 3P0X1. sure you made e-4 in 4 who doesnt you put on Senior Airman at 3 years.

what dont you agree with? since you refered to my carer field as Air Police. We havent been called AP's since vietnam

Saw a lot of 1 stripe APs make 2 and then 3 sitting in a warm truck while we were freezing our butts off and doing construction type labor.

yip i sat in my nice warm truck many times watching the flight line monkeys freezing their asses crawling all over KC-135's and B-1's

but I also froze MY ass off in a Defensive fighting position living in field conditions for 2 weeks every 2 months in Europe on a GLCM (Ground Launced Cruise Missile) deployment. I also sweated my ass off in Panama in a DFP at the main gate to Howard Air Base while the PDF (Pananamian Defense Force) drove by in a school bus opening up on us.

Who doesnt? Lots. As I said, many talented educated intelligent people got out as e-3. Regardless of the name, it is the e-x that you rank at and get paid at. Doubt this has changed today.

<<what dont you agree with? since you refered to my carer field as Air Police. We havent been called AP's since vietnam >>

Well, I got out in the Vietnam Era (67). What do you expect?

Again, not putting you down but 2 weeks in 2 months? Try 36 months in 3 years. Always worse where you are.

Still got that no time in grade no time in service officer attitude, huh AndrewR? We'll get you trained someday. Oh, and if you want to talk to MY JAG office rep anytime........Just hit that little PM button in my profile😉

If you're into electronics and only want a short stint look at the Navy or the Air Force. The Army schools are pretty worthless in my opinion. Although, I've seen some fine Computer Techs in camo uniforms.

hehe.. well im only an asshole like 10% of the time.. and only when im all alone.. once im with other people, im good to go...

<< um dont be a pu$sy join the marines. I can see you don't really want to get your ass kicked if you join the navy. >>

heh.. 😀 thanks for yer intelligent input.. i'll jot it down in my notes
