Damnit.. i've had it... i cant take this anymore.. im thinking of enlisting

TallBill

Ok.. so i've been really pissy lately.. im thinkin about enlisting in one service or another soon... i need my ass kicked in so that my life now seems like a breeze.. im trying to think of the best way to enlist and get educated where i want...

edit.... obviously a lot of people didnt read the entire thing... so heres what im thinking... enlist in the air force... go to basic training for 5 weeks, then a tech school for a few months... .. after 181 days of being in, i'd be classified as a veteran... and in my state, illinois.. veterans go to school for free.. so i could start in the fall or spring of the upcoming year.. a few years of once a month duty as a reserve.. and my commitment would be done.. unless i got called up, but that'd be perfectly ok with me

I thought in the tattoo thread you said you have arthritis. I would think that would stop you from being accepted. Plus, I'm not sure you really need your ass kicked in if you're able to recognize that you need it.

Air Force young man. They have it the best. Just remember to talk to some people in it first to find out what jobs are really what.

"I, (state your name), do solemnly swear to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic, and to bear true faith and allegiance to the same."

when i went to join i wouldnt say that i have any problems.. easy as that.. i wouldnt complain of pain unless it got to the point where i couldnt walk.. and even then so what.. i was thinking the air force because of their tech schools.. but i dunno.. i think it'd be a good experience overall

If you have a 4 year degree...go become an officer. Trust me...much better life than being just an enlisted man. 🙂

im 19 years old.. and i dont want to be a lifer.. i want to serve, and get the educational benefits... and quite honestly i dont want to be a man out on the battlefield.. i am a great shot.. but i'd rather learn the electronics behind the scenes.. and im not sure how good of a shot i'd have with that with the army or any other branch..

just shot of an email to my recruiter... im gonna have to work around recruiting office hours simply because of my work schedule... im ready to ship off NOW.. but i guess i wouldnt mind working for a few months.. then going to basic, then the tech school... then enrolling in a school in the spring of 2003... supposedly illinois has a veteren scolarship fund.. if yer 181 days active in the service, you go to school for free... which would.. be nice.. it would also help me get into UofI..

do ROTC. they give you fat scholarships and you get to be at least a second lieutenant upon graduation from college. pretty sweet i think.

also a possability.. but depending on what school i went to, it'd change the whole scheme of things... depending on what the air force recruiter tells me, i might see an army recruiter... cuz i know they have army rotc at NIU... not so sure about other schools.. and i know i'd wanna do basic before going to school

from what i've heard, the montgomery gi bill isn't as good as they make it sound. but then again, i also know a guy who's got like 5 degrees out of his stint in vietnam. *shrug*

no.. not as much money, not even close to the same education as one of the air force tech schools... no growth as a person, not quite the same physical aspect, and lastly no service for the country

You should apply for the nrotc scholarship... 4 year scholarship that covers full tuition...
after college, you automatically become an officer... a few years of commitment....

but def worth it for the full scholarship

Just what I want defending the country, somebody with physical problems that could make it difficult to even do the job, and then who'll be supported by tax money later in life when he has to go on disability or for massive medical bills.

I just gotta add....
in high school, I took field trips to Ft. Lewis, McChord AFB, and Bangor Naval Base(sub base)
I gotta say.... Bangor clearly had the best cafeteria and food on base out of the three!
and that tour of the sub kicked donkey... the tours of C-141's and stuff werent as fun

Um, excuse me, but Navy facilities are REKNOWNED for being the absolute worst in the services. I can understand a sub base having good food because that's part of the way in which they entice people to sit for days/weeks in a metal tube under billions of gallons of water. However, the old adage is that the Navy doesn't spend money on things that don't move, which means any and all shore facilities.

The Air Force is widely regarded as having the best facilities of the branches. If you are looking for a short, technical career, it is also the best of them for that. It is also, admittedly, the easiest in terms of basic training -- not something to be proud of, but perhaps someday I can help to change that. If you want a good, technical job, go Air Force hands down. If you want your ass kicked, join the Marines. If you want to be shat upon, join the Navy. If you want to PT all the time, marry a rucksack, and just have an overall crappy stint in the service, join the Army.

I can probably give you a good perspective on all the services since I know people that have gone in all of them and took one year of all three ROTCs. I am in the Air Force if you haven't guessed it. 😉

Although you don't want to be in combat I think there is nothing lamer and more sad that somebody who joins the military thinking they'll never be in combat and then bitches and whines when, low and behold, they find themselves being called into active duty and expected to shoot at people. Don't be that guy!

Anyway it could be a good experience 🙂

Another vote for the USAF.

Read what Andrewr wrote, spot on. The only place I disagree is that I think the best training is in the Navy but you also have to enlist for 6 years instead of 4 and put up with all the other limitations. One good thing about the Navy is that you get promoted on the basis of test scores and can advace more quickly. At least that was the way it was when I was in the AF but things do change.

The training may be good in the Navy, but that's the LAST place you want to be enlisted. The difference between officer and enlisted in the Navy is astounding, and it really only gets tolerable when you hit the higher enlisted ranks. Junior enlisted in the Air Force don't have to put up with as much crap from surly Chiefs and holier-than-thou officers. Granted, this info on the Navy is somewhat secondhand, but my impression of Navy enlisted is pretty bad from seeing the examples here at Goodfellow. The running joke is that the women will be decommissioned when they separate from the service, not retired (ie., rear quarters look like a hull, you decommission a ship...get it?).

Advancement in the Air Force is also based on test scores, though it's a composite among other criteria. If you want fast advancement as enlisted, go Army though reread what I wrote above about that. The basic line is that you WILL be promoted fast in the Army because their retention rates are terrible because the quality of life is awful. I have four ex-Army guys in my class, one a 14-year E-7 (all now Air Force officers), if that tells you anything. From what I have seen, there are many more ex-enlisted from the other services than you would expect -- they outnumber the former AF enlisted. That's a telling statistic when you think about it.

Sounds like you're a recruit already.

BTW, AF or Navy are your best bet if you want electronics. If by some chance you want to fly though, you might be disappointed. Selection for that ain't easy.
