Filed an extension on my 2009 taxes last year, and finally got around to filing them a few months ago. I don't owe any money so there should be no problems.

Just got a notice from the IRS in the mail, they completely ignored my First Time Home Buyers and Schedule M credits ($8400). I followed the filing instructions to the T so I'm 99% certain I didn't screw it up. Because they didn't count those credits they think I owe money, and are trying to charge me $250 in late filing fees. Currently on hold waiting to talk to someone about it ...

On a related note, I'm pretty sure the IRS hold music is designed to make you want to stab someone.

Next time your elected officials from Washington have a town hall meeting, go and ask them to abolish the IRS.

There is no reason for the IRS to exist, except to harass people.

Borrowed $$ from the rents when I opened the business and pay interest. Pop insisted on a 1099-int. I was a little sloppy with the form and the last digit of his SSN carried over to the income block. $70K of additional income, according to the IRS.😀

He was not amused.

Question: why did you need to file late?

Had to get an extension because I closed on my house end of April, after the tax deadline. I missed the extension date because life got extremely stressed/busy during the fall, and because I didn't owe any money it wasn't terribly important.

It really is quite a system we put up with. They hold a significant chunk of our money throughout the year with no interest paid and then if you file 1 day late they penalize you even though in most cases they have the money plus extra. Hard to believe that prior to the middle of WWII they didn't even withhold, it was your responsibility to come up with the money when it came time to pay taxes.

Did you file before Oct 15?

Bleh. Well I missed a number in one box which made everything go to hell. Have to file a 1040X form and wait another 12 weeks 🙁.

Too bad they can't just correct it for me, but no dice.

If you believed money was owed to you, there was no reason to file for an extension.

I expected to buy a home in 2010 (prior to the June 30th deadline), but it was not a 100% guarantee. If I hadn't filed an extension and had not bought a home then I would have owed money.

It seems you owe money anyway. :hmm:

Tax laws are way too complicated and rarely accomplish their intended purpose (to encourage people/companies to do or not do something).

I am not sue how to fix it, but it sure needs fixing.

It sounds like your first mistake was being crazy enough to do your taxes manually. TaxAct is well worth the $20.

Good luck.

But likely they will win.... they always win. :\
