Just got this from Compusa, for the first bootup, it boots up fine, then I installed the newest drivers, reboot, and bam, the screen now scrambles right after the win98se screen. had to plug in my old 8500LE to make this post and see that the ATI site was no help at all.

Running this on a MSI K7t266pro and 1800XP in win98se.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Hrmm, i have an ATI 8500 AIW, and an XP1800, and it is running very well. Perhaps you should install winxp or win2k because the driver support for 98 is probably weak.

Number 1: Always strip your drivers back to standard VGA when installing a new card.

Number 2: Which card is this?

Number 3: ATi doesn't officially have Windows98 drivers because Microsoft won't certify them. What drivers did you install?

Number 4: How did you install the drivers?

Thanks for the help, this is the AIW 8500 with DVI out, I only use Win98se because my joystick doesn't support XP...
sorry to sound stupid, but I've only ever installed OVER drivers, never UNinstalled any drivers....how do you go about doing this?

Thanks

It's not a problem. Follow the link for directions on how to clean out ATi drivers.

Do you have the 8500DV or the 8500 128MB?

You should be using the Windows Millenium drivers (even though you have 98).

Once you're back to standard VGA drivers, install the Catalyst drivers, then control panels, then WDM drivers, and then Hydravision. Do not reboot until you install Hydravision. Then we should have some clapping and happy faces.

Ah, but the Geforce never did so much for you!

You have the 8500 128MB. The 8500DV has Firewire and 64MB of RAM.

Unfortunately, all of the exciting functionality makes drivers a little more fun than they should be....

Followed the instructions on removing old drivers, removed them all, put the AIW 8500 in.....and bam, it still happens, still can't load all the way to my desktop, although it does fine in safe mode. Did this brand new card just get fried???

Tried reloading in the XP partition too and it would just reboot the comp....

Any ideas on this scrambling/halting issue in 98se?

This does not bode well...

By "reload" do you mean clean install or some other procedure?

What kind of BIOS settings relating to graphics to you have?

I'll try to avoid suggesting clean installing Windows98 for as long as I can...
