damn these things

Well I don't know where to begin....my computer has been f-ed up for about a week. It took me 16 hrs. to format a 15gig HD, and I reformatted because it was running horribly. Now it is still extremely choppy with pretty much every application, and the image on my monitor flickers a couple of times a minute....recently I found that when I play a game, it runs much better when I turn off all sound. When this happened I figued that it could be the cd-rom giving me trouble, but I then used my burner and it was still sucking....Bascially I just want to know if the problems are correlated in any way???? In order to alleviate the problem I have already ordered 512 more MB of ram, and I will probably buy new HD but wanted to ask the pro's first.....any help you can give me is appretiated.
On another note, damn anandtech for killing my other account because I had an aol email address...that was just mean!

might be your MB that is playing you up, as each device should operate OK individually, might be worth checking out your IDE connections.

You may want to try removing everything except your video card if you suspect a device. I still think your hard drive or IDE controller is bad.

I will remove everything when i get back from work tonight to see if that helps any...it was just so strange because all of these problems began at the SAME exact time which confused me because I couldn't see how they were all related, but I will follow your advice. On a different note, I have a strange suspicion that I will be buying a new HD soon, so do any of you have suggestions. I have been looking at a maxtor 40 gig, 7200 drive, but what are your opinions???

im sure ibm is fine for most people but some people on this forum have reported data loss,ect.

Yes alot of people had problems with the IBM 75gxp....but the 60gxp's seem to be doing well.
I've been looking at the seagate drives....I hear they are fast and very quiet.

Just wanted to give you an update on my problems. I added the 512 mb of ram, and that did help speed up the operations, however everything was still running choppy. I then removed the devices, but that didn't yield any new results...I think that the HD is 7-shades of all done considering that the computer seems to run fine, but then it hits a brick wall if it has to access the HD...furthermore, I know that you all told me to check my IDE connections, I know that I am dumb so could you please let me know how that is done....Thank you all again for your help.
