The whole series wasn't great. The first season was okay, very X-Files wannabe. The series didn't get great until the middle of season two when they switched from primarily stand alone episodes to more of a running narrative.

I disagree. While the first season and half of the second were mostly stand alone ghost hunter stories they helped develop who Sam and Dean are as characters to give them depth. The episodes themselves may not have been as interesting but it helped set the stage for the running narrative and give a better background for the characters. Also from what I've read the series was planned out from start to finish with the story told so far, they didn't all of a sudden switch from one style to another, it was planned. However I do think that each season has been better than the one before and I can't wait for the final season now that the seals have been broken.

I'm still watching the first season, The DVR has this season ready to go though.
So far I like that it is covering a lot of the 'ghost stories' and superstitions, vs the corporate/government conspiracy that shows like the xfiles went.

If only they had not killed the new Kolchak: Night Stalker series, Wolf Lake, Carnivale and Threshold, then we would be set.

It is highly unusual for a sci-fi / fantasy show like Supernatural to last this long. But, I am glad it is the exception!

Next season will be the last season. The creator wants to stop at season 5.
