Damn my new car is selling for $300 cheaper!

RossMAN

Grand Nagus
This morning I bought the Sunday edition of The Oregonian newspaper then sat down to eat breakfast. Just before starting on my pancakes I flipped to the auto classifieds section where dealers advertise their new and used wheels. As many of you know last month I bought a brand new 2002 Honda Accord SE for $2,000 under factory-to-dealer invoice for $17,244 and I was happy with the price I paid.

Just before taking my first bite of maple syrup drenched pancake goodness I almost screamed. The same dealership where I bought my 2002 Honda Accord SE from was selling the exact same car for $300 less @ $16,944 I double checked to make sure that it's brand new, not a demo or program car, nope. I double checked to make sure it's an automatic, yep, all the options were the same, yep, and they had 4 of these loss leader cars advertised. The weekend I bought mine they had 7 loss leader Accord SE's.

There were also some KILLER DEALS on Nissan Sentra/Maxima/Altima's and Toyota Camry/Corolla's. A 2002 Toyota Camry LE automatic for $17,800 is pretty good.

$300!!! That's almost a whole car payment!

i think to keep from going crazy and having buyers remorse, STOP READING THE CAR SALE ADS!

I can't, it's a force of habit and I must be mascochistic (sp?).

Plus I have about 10 people asking me for copies of loss leader ads per week so I like to keep informed on the deals.

Here's what last week's loss leader ad has:

Power Windows
Power Door Locks
Tilt Wheel
Cruise Control
Alloys Wheels
Remote Keyless Entry

MSRP $26,068

The dealership has 2 on loss leader ad special for $21,788 after $1,000 factory rebate.

Damn that's a nice price.

:Q:Q:Q

What an awesome price!

BTW, regarding the Accord, the prices will keep dropping as the launch of the 2003 Accord gets closer and closer. 🙁 I've noticed that Honda and their dealers are quite aggressive in clearing out previous generation models BEFORE the new one comes out.

ross, you're crazier than I am.....quit deal hunting on a car. you already have one!

and if i were in your shoes, i woulda waited until december to buy

N8Magic - Yeah that is a crazy price for a loaded 2002 Nissan Maxima SE automatic for only $21,788 Maybe I shoulda bought a Maxima instead 😀

PsychoAndy - It's a (bad) habit, I always flip to the auto classifieds section first to see what current car prices are. My sister will probably buy a new car in a few years after I've helped her achieve a 700+ credit score A+ credit rating (not bad for a 20 year old).

Loss leadre cars? How do I find such deals? My 93 Intrepid is spewing all kinds of toxic fumes these days, and its about time I started looking for a good (non-domestic) replacement.

how about spec v's?

i have buyers remorse on them over my 02 impreza rs 🙂

i keep on telling my self AWD, and subaru reliablity (made in japan compared to the sentra's mexico's build)

Maybe you can price match it at Staples. Got a coupon? 😉

Considering the largest Staples coupon I've ever seen was $50 off $200, I don't think that would have saved me that much. I did try price matching one dealership against another though and they wouldn't budge.

MaxDSP - Next Saturday morning buy your local newspaper, flip to the auto classifieds section you should see new cars advertised for LOWER THAN MSRP prices. Each dealership only has a few (1-4) of these in stock, so once these loss leaders are sold you pay whatever the window sticker says *shudder*. It's best to buy the paper early Saturday morning and show up at the dealership just when they open to ensure that your new car isn't sold. The only bad thing about loss leaders is you have no choice in color, trim, or options what you see is what you get. If they only have a black manual with leather, well that's what you're going to get or pay thousands more for your color/trim/options.

I haven't seen any Nissan Sentra Spec V's on sale probably because they sell themselves. I have seen Sentra GXE automatics for $12,888 though, nice price for a Civic competitor.

Subaru's are awesome.

Excellent, thanks for the tip Ross.

the 2003 models are inbound to Dealers what do you expect it is liquidation time. the best time of the year to buy is now.
