About 4 hours ago, my sister's roomate from college, Jodi, found out her mother and her mother's boyfriend were in a motorcycle accident and are in the hospital with massive injuries. They hit a spot of oil on the road, and slid off. Doctor said on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being best, she is about a 2. I just got a call from my sister, and she said that Jodi's mom is dying. :(

Let me take a moment to remind everyone that we are not invincible. Take a chance now to love your loved ones, because you may not get another chance.

Hey, Rodger! :D How've ya been, ya old goat? I've been working ENTIRELY too much lately, and in between work, other things crop up. You know the routine. Everyone is starting to forget my ugly mug. :)

Well, I'm on my way down to my sister's apartment in Latrobe right now after I go hit Walmart. So far, this makes three people I've personally known that have been killed this year, motorcycle related. I still miss my ZX-9R though. :p

doh... sorry to hear... were they wearing any kind of protection? What kind of injuries did they suffer? I've been browsing through sportbike forums and came across a quote:

"Good judgement comes from bad experiences, and most of those come from bad judgement"

Just a reminder to always wear protection. I also came across several graphic pictures of road rash and other things that happen when you don't ride with the proper gear, so I decided to order a pair of riding pants and boots to go along with my helmet, jacket, and gloves. I'm not riding my bike again until I get my pants and boots.

Bull! This is the 'I'm too stupid to wear proper clothing and too stupid to slow down' excuse.

Experience is the best teacher....

They should outlaw stupid people too, then we wouldnt get comments like the one you just made. As a motorcyclist I am really sad and hope they pull through. About the oil spill they must have been doing something wrong cause I have gone over many oil sport, puddles and other stuff and the bike didnt even flinch.

I dunno,. with only two wheels even if you're going slowly loss of traction can screw you over. If the front wheel slides you're gone. Believe me I learned this personally not long ago on a bicycle. I haven't wiped out since I was a little kid yet I did recently because i was pushing a bike too hard and the front tire was overinflated. If it hadn't been overinflated I probably would have been fine. But still.. the front tire skidded on a damn bicycle and I still got hurt. I did my best to lessen the damage (and believe me I could have died that day) but I still hurt my wrist and neck. Imagine on a motorcycle. If the oil made the front wheel skid wth can you do? you're screwed...

I went down on one once. I was turning a corner, and an oil truck dumped a mess in front of me. No one could have stayed upright in that circumstance. Obviously, wearing protective clothing is what you want, but face it if you slide into a wall at 60 mph, the helmet isnt going to keep your bones from going scrunch. We dont have enough info to judge here. That said, death will get us all. I do not intend to wait for it hiding under my bed.

Tominator, I normally would agree, but I know these people very well. I just got back from the hospital. The driver (Her BF) is a VERY experienced rider. He has been riding ever since he was 18, and he is 51 right now. He goes to cruises all the time. They were going around a turn @ 65MPH, when they hit what appears to me to be gear or hydraulic oil. Not a big patch of it, but it is covered by road dust and dirt, so it is hard to see. It looks like a fixed pothole. The front tire slid and dipped, causing the bike to go sideways, and pitch them off the bike. They lost control, and slid off the road, through a small concrete lot into trees. Jodi's mom (Pardon the phrase) looks like hamburger. Both were wearing leathers and helmets. Jodi's mom is still alive, but not doing well at all, and is not expected to make the night.

Bad things happen to experienced riders. My old supervisor in New Jersey broadsided a van at 50. He panicked, and jumped off the bike, to hit the side of the van spread eagle, arms out, literally sticking to it (Prolly the only thing that saved him. It absorbed the energy. It looked like a cartoon stunt, you could see his outline in the sheet metal plain as day.) I had a rear wheel bearing fail at 120 mph, hard locking the rear tire. They said it was a freak accident and could never happen. I damned near didn't walk away. 3 more feet, and I would have been sushi.

Man, I feel for your girfriend's mom, her bf, you et al, I hope all turns out "okay".
I also gotta stand by the other riders here....you places your bets, you takes your chances...ride ready, ride smart. Everytime a person throws a leg over a bike they gotta know it might be the last...I broke my back in '83 (age 18)(yes smartasses, I'm OLD) in a a bike/car accident. They said at the time I might never walk again... andthey were "almost" right My prayers go out to them and you.

I'm sorry to hear about this - I wish them both well. Unfortunately motorcycles carry a certain amount of danger regardless of the skill and experience level of the rider.

You should take pictures of the scene and do your best to find out what, when and why oil was used. Who ever did it broke many laws includeing some federal . Time for a lawyer.

I sincerely hope they do ok, but skin grafts ain't no fun. Internal injuries are the dangerous part.

Once upon a time, I was riding home from teaching a MSF course. A lady in a Grand Am didn't see me, made an illegal turn from the cener lane, crossing my path (I was traveling in the same direction next to her) and cut me off.

Score-$1,000 damage to a Grand Am, one totaled Pacific Coast, 7 broken ribs, 1 punctured lung, 1 compound fracture of my left humerus. I was wearing about $1200 worth of protective gear, only thing I was missing was my boots (I was wearing high top basketball shoes because of all the walking/running I had to do while teaching the MSF course)

If I hadn't been wearing the right gear I would have been injured much worse, and if I'd been riding a bike that didn't have the built in crush zones that the Honda PC's have built into them, I'd have been hurt much worse.

In my humble opinion, if you're going to ride, you need to realize that the very real possibility exists that you may crash & that you will likely be injured in such a crash. Further as you get older, all those insults to your body accumulate.

My personal threshold for pain, disfigurement & loss of about 25% of the function of my left arm finally overwhelmed my desire to ride, & I sold my one remaining bike 6 months after the wreck.

Hmmmmmm.......approximately 2,000 deaths per year are attributable to motorcycles.

Over 700,000 per year are attributable to heart disease....

Over 500,000 lost to cancers per year....

100,000+ to chronic respiratory disease...

Definitely the motos that are the cause for concern.

Sad story..but hang in there things may get better..I don't know why people throw the dice and ride them things. A friend of mine died in a cycle wreck a few months ago. There's no room for error on those things. Good luck.
