Applied to their Undergrad School, major in CompSci. Can only guess what Cornell and CMU are gonna say. I think I need a drink.

Edit: Just checked their website and now I've been accepted :) Oh happy day!

What does UIUC stand for?

University of Illinois Urbana Champaign
Their football team sucks.

OMG yes. It was hard sitting there through the Northwestern game! I kept hoping we'd get blown out so I could leave.

Ouch, UIUC is a notch below CMU and Cornell. Good luck though! Have any backup schools?

(original sentence reads:"man, you, cornell and CMU are way selective." I'm not drunk. I'm not tired. My first language is English. What happen?)

I feel your pain. I almost had a heart attack when I got the letter from Rice, but I was lucky in that it was a good letter.

where else have you applied?

and deffered -- this mean rejected or waitlisted? manual review -- this means they are going over your app again, so you might still get in? UIUC looks like a great school, and I wish you luck .. .. .. it sounds like you still have a shot to get in.

What??

its not that hard. He says(translated into 'easy'): "Cornell and CMU are even harder to get into than UIUC, have you applied to any schools that are easier to get into?"

People underestimate UIUC because it's a state school. I went there in '92 for Chemical Engineering, because US News ranked their Engineering program 3rd in the nation, behind MIT and Stanford. I think it's dropped since then, but their Accounting school is always #1 in the nation. (Well, I haven't checked this year.) Needless to say, I dropped out my sophomore year, and finished with a business degree from Arizona State. I always felt it was a second rate degree to what I could have had. My advice: GO TO EVERY CLASS!!! DO NOT SKIP!!!!!

Congrats, getting that letter ( or checking online ) is an awesome feeling. Good luck with CS, I think I'll be dropping my CS minor after this term.

I actually am looking forward to majoring in CS. Sure I like programming, but I also like the concepts associated with programming. Optimization, problem solving, discovering new and different ways to do things, etc are all things I enjoy. My current AP Comp Sci teacher is not emphasizing the language so much as the concepts behind it, which can be applied to almost every programming language. Also I realize that CS does not solely consist of programming, but it is pretty fun.

I've heard that Urbana-Champaign is one of the shittiest urban areas in the entire country. Be prepared for the town to suck ass.

Whatever. I've had quite few friends who went to UIUC and they couldn't speak highly enough about it. They were very happy with the school and surrounding area. Most state schools in the midwest are in podunk towns without overly large populations.

UIUC has a very good CS program, and I'm sure very good teachers and professors, however you will often be stuck with a TA, and I don't express how much it sucks when that happens.

Also, it's a HUGE party school, so if you're living in the dorms, be prepared to have to go somewhere else to study.

Depends though... somtimes TA's enjoy teaching and teach much better than the professor actually does.

1. uiuc is a good school (alumni here)

2. some parts of champaign and urbana are "ghetto", but you have to go pretty far off campus to get to them

3. uiuc is a party school as much as any other college is.
