is the VPU fan running?

Yeah, I replaced it with a quality fan and verified it was running. I'm going to test it in another rig just to rule out my other hardware, but it does appears to be the card.

My ATi 9700 Pro AIW just died. I bought it new back when it was just under $300, no longer under any warranty.

Any $100 or less cards that compare to the 9700 pro (not concerned about the AIW part) ?
Check your warranty . . . my ati Radeon 8500 has a THREE-year warranty and i just got it back from rma a monrth or so ago.

😉

Hmm, might be worth looking into (course I no longer have the box and receipt).

Thanks for all the suggestions, right now I'm using my old 32mb 8500 as a stand in..
You will NOT need a box or receipt - ati 'knows' your date from your serial number.

The 9700 is NOT yet 3 years old - contact ATI (RMA TAKES A COUPLE OF WEEKS) - PROBLEM SOLVED.

😉

couple of weeks?!??! :Q
that's ATI support for ya...
geez last time I did RMA with gainward and leadtek, they overnighted a replacement to me..

Is that kosher? Or should I flame you along the lines of swapping good card for defective card?

edit: Aircooled--Have you checked the FS/FT forum? Maybe someone is selling a 9700 for cheap.

Thei say expect up to a month - it has to go to NY then to Canada back to NY then 2 U. 😉

You modded the card? No wonder it died. 😛

ATI won't accept that for RMA :Q

A $100 videocard won't do - but the 9800Pros should be sub$200 pretty soon . . . perhaps you can keep your soldering iron away from THAT one. 😛

I don't lnow if it's kosher, depends on what went bad to cause the card to die.
If it was due to damage possibly inflicted when replacing the HS/F then it's not kosher, but I doubt that's the case, unless it went bad soon after replacing HS/F.

Seems like the card died through no fault of the user (or his modification), so *I* think it's kosher.

Yes, I replaced the stock fan (with a better one) which I assume voids the warranty. It has been working with this fan for the last year so the fan is obviously not the problem. I have never overclocked the card.

I will not rip-off Best Buy by swapping the cards (I just don't feel good about it)

I doubt ATI will fix it for me, but I will go through the process anyway just to see.

Thanks to everyone for their advice.

Since you paid for your video card with a VISA credit card, I would contact VISA at 1-800-882-8057 asking if your VISA qualifies for warranty manager.

If it does they'll fix your video card - for free.

thats why i buy $50 video cards 😉

Exactly. I am too wary to spend more than $100 or so on a video card. The only way I would put one of those super expensive cards in my system like some people do is if I won it.

Thanks RossMAN, I'll look into that. As stated in my PM, I was not the original CC holder, so I will have to see if I can contact the cardholder.

American Express handles this kind of stuff very nicely as well, give it a try

I use American Express for all of my online shopping because it'svery easy to deal with problems

It's worth a shot if it means getting your video card fixed or a new one - for free. I would make every effort to contact the cc holder.

ATI accepted my RMA request and sent me an RMA number, so I will start by sending it to them, and see what happens next.

You could always do the old switch a roo, just go buy from Circuit City if you can find it there with cash and swap it out with your's then return the package.

Circuity City doesn't ask questions on returns, they just take it back.

I wouldn't do this but I know people who have done it with similar items.

uh, that's not good advice. moderator hellfire downpour will commence shortly...

best advice is don't spend $300 on video cards anymore. i stopped doing that a long time ago, and my $150 AIW 9000 does everything i need (including playing bfv) just fine.

What I'm getting is odd lines showing up during POST and pre windows bootup, then windows will boot and have blocky corruption then eventually crash to a blocky or grainy screen. Anyone know what fails on the card to cause this?

My 8500 did this on arrival. It needed to be RMA'd. ATI said the 'chip' got toasted.
