About two years ago I was 250lb and 6'0". So i got really into Met-Rx protein shakes and bars, and started mountain biking 4 times a week for an hour+ each time. Over the course of 2 or 3 months, I was able to get down to 224lb. (And hell, I didn't even do the Met-Rx recommended weight training, just cardio exercise.) But just like 99.9% of all of those who try to loose weight, I gained it all back because I didn't stick to the regimen.

Whats my point to all of this? Its just a really good Idea to NOT go with one of those high-protein/low-carb diets as studies have shown that with these high protein/low-carb type diets, when people gain the weight back they usually gain it all back AND then some.

Just some advice to eat a low-cal balanced diet, if your going to try and loose weight. Don't go extreme in one direction. (But I do gotta admit, that I was surprised at how good the metrx shakes were with a banana.) And the summer before I actually started a concerted exercise effort, I cut out my excessive soda drinking.

At one point in the summer of 2001 I was drinking 2-3 cans a DAY!! Once I stooped drinking all that Pepsi, I lost about 20 pounds by the end of 2001, without exercises or anything. Just getting rid of the sugared-water can do a great part in helping you get 'less-fat.'

Just my $0.03. Good luck with whatever you decide man.....

i think for a lot of people those 3 alone will make a big difference. lots of people can probably cut 500 calories just by cutting out soda. that's a pretty big difference.
In college I consumed 100 cal/8oz * 144 oz = 1800 calories per day of soda.

haha yea, i drank those 1liter big gulp things every day. dodged a bullet not becoming a diabetic:p

dunno if its true, but in the book fatland, the author talks about how high fructose corn syrup(soda sugar) is metabolized differently then regular sugar..more likely to be stored as fat.

High Fructose Corn syrup is the scourge of the American Diet. EVERYTHING we eat now (and a few items we don't eat) is saturated with HFCS. I'd be willing to bet that 90% of all foods at the supermarket has corn syrup or sugar as one of it's first 4 ingredients. It really is sad and disgusting at how HFCS is in almost everything we eat and is making America fatter than it should be.

Back in Oct I was 5'9" 210lbs, L shirt and tight 35" jeans. Now I'm 194lbs, M shirt and loose 34" jeans. I'd prob be around 185-190 but I've been doing weights daily for over 2 months, added some muscle. Diet and exercise, most important thing is don't slack off. 1 week of pigging out will put you back 2-3 weeks in terms of progress. Make your lifestyle change and stick with it.

My goal is 33" waist and 175-180, hoping to get there by summer. Oh and get a workout or diet buddy, peer pressure is great motivation.
