The most important thing is that you believe that you can lose the weight. You can. It's a pysiological impossibility that you cannot lose the weight. Those fat people who say they can't are flatly incorrect (barring any possible and rare physical ailments).

Now that you know you can lose the weight, and you know that you want to lose it, you simply need to go about doing it. I'd recommend an increase in activity, which would be 5 times/week of cardio and weights if you can. In terms of calories eat 6 small meals a day, preferably with a good protein base in each. At your body weight I'd think aim for around 2200 calories/day to start. Match that with the working out and the weight will FLY off.

I started out right around where you were, 6'3, ~275 lbs towards the end of january. Now I'm down to 250 by just cutting out the soda, cutting out candy/junk food and excercising a lot more. I drink a lot of water throught the day as well.

The hardest part is the first week or so, since you're trying to change a lifestyle that you've been used to for a long time. Just stick with whatever you decide to do.

^^^ The secret of my success.

this man speaks the truth. sodas are nothing but empty calories.
in addition to your exercise routine, eat healthy....

if you have trouble saying motivated find someone at the gym to work out with.

i just started working out again after being lazy for 5-6 months. got to the point where i hated how lazy and chubby i was getting...even though i dont have as big of a frame as you (5'7, 165lbs)

I don't think empty calories describes sodas well enough. Sodas are pure sugar intake. Worse than many other things you will eat during the day. If you don't like the taste of water, then look into something like Fruit2o. Having something between water and soda, as a middle ground compromise, was my key to getting away from soda. Once you've stopped drinking soda, you have already taken lots of sugars / carbs out of your daily diet.

Thanks for the backup. I believe what you said was gospel truth, too. My wife and I are working on this together. She encourages me, I do the same for her. It's really hard for us to exercise together though. She is short and light framed whereas I'm much taller and have a huge skeletal/muscular frame. Our needs are vastly different but our motivation is the same: get fit for a longer and healthier life together. That's all it has taken for us.

Tret, if you don't have a wife/gf, find a friend who shares a desire to get healthy and buddy up. Hold each other accountable for motivation. It works.

i think for a lot of people those 3 alone will make a big difference. lots of people can probably cut 500 calories just by cutting out soda. that's a pretty big difference.

^What Skoorb said^ I've recently lost 75 pounds doing this. It works and if you join a gym to do it in you get to meet nice looking babes in the process and make some good friends too.

I switched to diet pop and lost 5 pounds in a couple months without changing anything life style or food wise. I'm 5'11" 185lbs.

dont listen to anyone else but the second person and me... diets do not work, they suck, make you feel sick, and you WILL eventually start eating what you want again...

Cut down on the portions <- Key #1
Goto the gym with a mix of Cardio and Lifting 3x a week. <- Key #2

You will be happy with yourself in due time.

Here's an amazing diet that works for nearly everyone. Just make sure to follow the steps correctly and you'll be on your way to weight loss:

1. Put down the fork.
2. Exercise.

Good luck.

Jeez, after 30 minutes of the exercise bike at 28 miles per hour, my heart rate still doesn't touch 150.

In college I consumed 100 cal/8oz * 144 oz = 1800 calories per day of soda.

5'9 was at 235

now at 218 after 1.5 months...

for me it was portions...my stomach has shrunk, I can't eat as much as before...so it's a good thing. By my b-day in may I expect to be at 200...which for my frame is good...even when I was 180 I was still a 38 waist...wide bodied. By mid -summer I expect to be in the high 170's.

Losing weight really isn't that hard, you just have to find a routine that works and stick with it.
