Damn, I thought I would never pay $1000 for a hard drive again!

Hehehe, it's nice to dream. :D

Hate to let you all off, but I only bought one...and believe me, I choked. The last drive I paid that much money for was an IDE drive with 768mb, but I don't think it cost quite that much. If I remember, it was like $750. I also remember the sales rep saying, "you will never fill it" :Q

Man you've come a long way. I remember just a couple of years ago you were here begging for money so you could pay Vet bills.

Sometines people do actually recover and get up. Frankly, Mike, I don't recall ever coming here and begging. What I do remember is, a couple people who knew me, learning of the situation. It was them who asked for the help. Nevermind...that was some time ago and those who helped did our family a huge favor when we needed it. ;)

yeah, if i remember correctly at work, we use compaq proliant ML370's with raid 5, and 3 drives are the lowest number. all the info are distributed evenly so that if one goes bad, you know, hot swap it out....raid 5. hmmm this is atot, most people know this already.

it's like doing a cheap card trick in front of penn & teller's house.

A little help from a lot of people goes a long way... I personally have never been one to turn down someone in need at the moment. You never know you could end up in the same position someday...

On another note... since you only need 3 of the 5 drive... you can donate the other two to me ;)

I just installed a 73.6 gig Seagate 10,000 RPM U320 drive in my system at home. But I got my drive for free ;)

 from a fellow 15k.4 user. I've got a pair of the 146GB and they were worth every penny. I got a slightly better deal though :D

To those who say "waste of money", suit yourself. You certainly wouldn't turn one down if it showed up on your doorstep.

I tried scsi once, and ended up getting a bad drive, then a bad controller.. the whole thing was a pain in the ass.

Did you ever fill it up; or did you upgrade to a newer/faster/sexier model before the end of its lifetime and cast off/ignore and old friend that was devoting their life to you :(

Maybe you are a Wham/Bam/Thank-you person with respect to the hard drives. Use them and leave them type of guy:p

I don't think I'd ever pay that much for a drive for home use... unless maybe it was solid-state.

I bet for $4,400, I could build a server with 10x the storage capacity, less noise, faster transfer rates (SCSI still has faster access times), and MORE reliablity (could afford to have every drive mirrored with parity for that price) using SATA or PATA drives..

SCSI drives are loud and hot. They're made for an air-conditioned server room.

Props to the OP, wish I could afford that kind of goodness. The last time I tried SCSI was ~7 years back (Adaptec 2940UW, 3x 4.5GB 10K Cheetahs). The drives are still in use, but IDE got a heck of a lot more cost effective since then (in terms of "matching" performance + price).
