Okay, let's see how many stereotypes and myths we can get in this thread.

Are you Supertool in disguise? You two seem to have the same reasoning ability. It's a sport that millions of people enjoy and it's a very lucrative industry as well.

A sport eh? Care to explain how its a sport?

I used to lived near tons of NASCAR fans. In fact my step dad is one. I learned most of this first first hand expedience. Deny it all you want man.

not popular in north america for some reason though, why?

rally course dont turn left, they dont use V8's and generally jus lack the skill, US does have some kind of rally event, and basically the guy who was leading was british....but back in england and the WRC he would be considered a no hoper against the likes of Petter Solberg, and Markko martin

The downside of rally is that there is never any side by side action, and there's not a whole lot of spots where you can watch cars do thier thing for an extended period of time. There is amature rally races in various forms. Also, there is the whole legal issue of what happens when a rally car takes out 26 fans that are acting as an outside barrier to a turn. As far as skill, I consider rally racers excellent drivers, but the lack of side by side type of racing just kills the excitement.
