I just got a call from my supervisor asking me where I was the other day. I work in a remote site and no one ever really checks on me on a day to day. So I decide to take a long lunch (3hrs), ironically the 1st time I have ever done it in three and a half years, and that is the day that he decides to come a give me a visit. Here I thought I got away with it, since i came back to my office and finished the <edit> day out without any issues.

So needless to say, I am busted. He going come pay me another visit on Tuesday... I am about 1/2 way through escrow on a new house, so I hope he isn't coming to fire me! j/k I hope it doesn't come to that, I haven't been a poor employee, with the company about 3.5 years. The last time I saw this supervisor in person was last xmas at the company party, and before that was when I was hired 3 years ago. In anycase, I may be browsing the 'net while waiting for help desk calls, but no more walking away from my desk!

update: Aug 29, 2006

Well, he left a couple of hours ago, and I guess there are a couple of problems with my performance. The first is one of the directors complained that I "only help the pretty girls and the ugly ones don't get any help" (straight quote). If could be more even with how I help my users it would be great. 2nd, is that I cannot offer advice to people on a personal basis. So when people say I have a computer that doesn't work at home what should I do, or what kind of computer shoudl I buy my son, I am now to say that I cannot answer that, and should report the people who asked to the appropriate director, since they shouldn't be talking to me anyhow, unless it is for IT support. Overall, it sounds like they think I am too social with my users, especially if it is a pretty gal.

Then of course, he came last thursday to talk to me about this and my shinanigans of taking off for three hours didn't help...

3 hr. lunch? What the hell were you doing? Just tell him the truth. Maybe he'll realize the reason you decided to do it (nobody ever comes by) and he'll stop by every now and again.

you know, it probably wasn't just a coincidence. He might have checked up on you before, but since you weren't goofing off / taking 3 hour lunches, he had no need to reveal himself.

Hah... I had a similar situation at a previous job... I actually worked on-site but my supervisor was an off-site contractor who I saw when I interviewed and maybe two other times. But it seemed like every time my co-worker and I left early or took a long lunch or got in a little late he called looking for us.

Man I got busted before taking a long lunch when I was posted at a remote site that was a few hours from my closest supervision.

Wasn't 3 hours though! Damn man.

Got caught falling asleep once to

I was so f'ing tired and waiting on some shyte to process and the second I started to nood off this guy walks in that wasn't my supervisor or anything but of course said something to my supervisor.

I hated that job so f'ing much though.

Since I am moving, there is a tree that is pushing up the side walk to the front door. I took a long lunch to be present and have it cut down. When they were 2/3 of the way through cutting the stump up, I went back to the office.

But he emailed me and it seems that he was more mad that I took off without telling anyone vs. the fact that I had a 3 hr lunch. He wants to see both myself and my coworker, so I do not think the origional reason to meet was bad. I will update when I get a chance... after my shift of course.

definitely tell the truth. if you try to lie or even stretch the truth you will fumble and probably make him more mad. plus, it is the ethical thing to do.

You already have a legit excuse, so just dramatize it a bit: you got an emergency call from the tree removal guy requesting your immediate presence at the house. You thought you could handle it in an hour (your usual lunch break), but it took longer than you thought, you lost track of time, etc.

Apologize profusely, promise it will never happen again, and offer to use your personal/vacation/sick time to cover the absence. If he believes it was really an emergency at home, chances are he will be lenient...although you'd better count on him checking up on you again, so if you get out of this, you be a good boy from now on.
