A-10s, yes. F/A-18s, maybe? B1? No, not a chance in hell. There is no use for a bomber of that size and cost at that altitude. That plane flies like an airliner and doesn't handle well compared to more versatile attack aircraft. Plus, the fact that it is variable geometry means it loses maneuverability at an increasing rate as it's speed increases.

The B-1 has evolved from a series of studies in the 1960s into a long-range bomber that can fly at low altitudes and high speeds to penetrate Soviet airspace for extended periods. With the election of President Nixon in 1970, the initial development contract was awarded to North American Rockwell with the first of four B-1As taking flight in December of 1974. Initial plans called for production of 240 of the aircraft. During the ensuing four years, the B-1A flight test aircraft demonstrated sustained low altitude flight at 200 ft, high-speed flight with speeds up to Mach 2.22, and the successful launch of the B-1?s primary weapon, the nuclear AGM-69A SRAM.

Dude, the whole point of the B1-B is low-level nap of the earth flight using terrain mapping. The B1-A was the high altitude Mach 2 bomber. The B1-B is barely Mach 1 and is for low-level flight.

well I got pwned.
i guess that shows my knowledge of combat aircraft all right

EDIT: maybe this explains why my B1Bs always got destroyed when I played the NWC mods to Fleet Command back in the day 🙂 Damn French Rolands took it out repeatidly. Guess that may have been beecause I had it at 55K feet 🙂

The B1B has NOE ability. Whether it would actually be used in combat is something totally different altogether, but it does have the ability.

It's not all that unusual to see F-16's from the local Air National Guard unit flying around, but the way these came over downtown was something else. Sounded like all hell breaking loose. Gotta love those things....

😀

I see them from Luke Air Force Base around Suprise sometimes..

They are awesome, would love to fly in one.

That's REAL jet noise there. :Q
For some reason or another there were some B52's flying into Tulsa one day, who knows why, and they were coming in low and slow approaching Tulsa from the South. They turned and made about 3 circles around downtown before heading off to the West. That was cool....talk about some noise..... The most impressive thing I have ever seen was while hunting down in SE Oklahoma. I was up on a ridge above a valley and some B-1's came screaming through the valley.....practicing low level bombing runs I guess....cool as hell.

B1Bs don't do low-level bombing runs. This isn't world war 2 or vietnam where a low-altitude bombing run would ever be required from a $200 mil+ strategic bomber whose sole purpose (at it's inception) was to carry nuclear warheads.

Edit: I should refresh my threads if someone else has already said what i was going to say 🙂

Um....yeah. That's it.

It's the sound of your tax dollars being wasted, thousands by the hour 🙂

"It is the sound of inevitability.." - Agent Smith

Actually, it's not necessarily a waste, provided the mission had some good purpose.

You're crazy... Having worked on the Hornets (and worked side by side with F-16s for many many years), they're not nearly as loud as the F-16s. Them things even though with one engine but that engine got a big ass, and the noise is, I would say equal, if not louder than the F/A-18s. Hmm... wait til they break Supa Sonics.

That is one impressive plane, when you see it in flight. The biggest 'wow!' I ever got must have been when I was messing around in the river near my gran's house as a kid, and a tornado chasing a hawk came screaming down the valley floor. Nearly knocked me backwards!
The loudest would have to be a Vulcan bomber at an airshow. My god is that an impressive plane.

i live next to a marine air base...i see and hear the f/a-18's flying overhead like mad everyday..

but...
it's nothing compared to when one of those most humongous cargo jets decides to launch itself into the blue sky over civilian cities...that was soo loud and soo crazy ....i felt every blood plate in my body vibrate....

It's the sound of our neighbors and friends ready and waiting to protect the sorry asses who won't protect themselves.

*EDIT* Or if you live in Iraq, it's more like a "oh sh!t... RUN!!!" kinda sound...

NOE flying is probably never going to be used for the vast majority of US aircraft unless doing CAS missions in close proximity to US forces. Fact of the matter is that low altitude is too unpredictable for threats, particularly AAA, and even the mighty A-10 is susceptible to being torn to pieces if flying low and slow. Nevertheless, implying that the B-1 is past its prime is ignoring its most recent successes, lauded even by fighter jocks, in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Using satellite aided munitions, one B-1 can attack from 24 to 84 separate targets in one sortie with 2,000 to 500lb bombs. Its legs give it a much wider choice of airfields from which to operate and allows it the flexibility to minimize aerial refueling while maintaining extended loiter. How many A-10s or F/A-18s would it take to accomplish the same mission parameters? Even more importantly, how many additional support aircraft are required to accomplish the same mission, from AR to electronic protection because fighter aircraft are less able to conduct electronic warfare?

Someday maybe you'll have the wisdom to understand the sacrifices made EVERY DAY by the members of the armed services. Until then, keep your fscking sarcasm to yourself.

Exactly... I almost wish for a war on our home soil again to show these anti-war a-holes what war is all about, and what people in other countries deal with every day. It's because of the men and women flying those F-16's that these morons are able to make their moronic comments.

Yes, especially the low fly-bys of the Blue Angels...VERY loud!

i had an army transport plane, along with 2 support planes fly over my house, they couldnt have been higher than 1000 ft. you just hear a huge rumbling then 3 big green things fly past.

and i live in northeast ohio.

You want a war so anti-war a-holes can see what people in other countries deal with? 😕

That must be Republican logic or something.

I don't see the anti-war sentiments in his statement. Nor have I ever seen Fausto make such a comment. If anything, Fausto was just making fun of the cheesiness of his comment.
