DAMN DELL and their f@ck#ng proprietary b$llsh*t!

I have a 500sc floating around used as a box for a fax server, that fan that is super loud on mine is only loud for literally the first 2 seconds. I almost freaked when I first booted it up but as soon as it passed POST it went to normal computer sound levels. You should have just called support first and asked if it was normal before hacking the thing apart.

Dell's servers are a lot less proprietary than most other companies and don't use proprietary chips or chipsets (alpha, power4, etc) and the boards used are Serverworks boards, again not proprietary. The only reason Dell would want to use other proprietary components is to prevent people who don't know what they're doing from hacking it up and trying their own crap.

Regardless, the bottom line is, if you were looking for speed, reliability, stability and low noise levels for $350 - especially in a SERVER, you're setting yourself up to be disappointed. The other thing you could have done is called to make sure that those noise levels were normal before you decided to break everything.

You must be high. Gateway has some of the worst PSUs. I bought a top of the line Gateway 2 years back and the PSU blew out the first week. Then a couple months later it blew out again. When I replaced it with an Antec, it didn't work because the MB was proprietary. I know there was a class action lawsuit against Gateway for my PC back then because of these problems. Gateways are absolute garbage.

hmm it dont really matter if it is a server (well besides the fact its loud).

I gave a old dell server to a friend who wanted a computer. it has been working great for a year. Yeah its loud but other then that its great.

it is kind of weird you cant put a diffrent fan in it. but not to shocking.

Dude, you got a Dell! Seriously, you should of called Dell tech support and had them overnight you a replacement fan. I'm 100% positive they would of sent one right out to you.

This happened to me once with a dell. Held the phone up to the noisy fan and that was all, no hassle
and the replacenent fan arrived in 2 days and yes it was much less noisy.
