Damn debit cards slowing the cashier's line...

My main grippe with debit/credit cards is the damn service charges. I have to try to avoid using my debit card if I'm doing lot of small purchases so I end up taking out cash that way I pay the service charge once instead of for each purchase. Why should I need to do this? There should be some kind of law against service charges.

Oh, she came over. She showed him where to swipe the card. But then he didn't realize he had to also choose debit card as his payment option on the touchscreen. She told him to hit the button, and he proceeded to argue with her because he already selected debit card on the pin pad. She tried to explain to him that he also had to hit the button on the touchscreen, but when you are one hundred thirty six years old you don't need to listen to what punk kids are saying. You can just keep repeating yourself because it is they who do not understand you. After going back and forth twice, she decided she would just hit the button for him. But this old fuck actually blocked her, again repeating that he had already chosen the debit card option. But alas, at one hundred thirty six years of age, your reflexes are not what they used to be. The clever young girl waited for him to drop his arm and quickly hit the button before he could react again.

Would you rather they take the time to write a check or count out exact change? I had an old lady in front of me in line the other day that wrote a ~$5 check, took forever...

QFT. The only times my debit card has had issues are when the store's reader errors out, or when certain gas stations put a 100+ USD 'hold' when I go to buy $5 in gas. 😛
Well they have to charge something in advanced. If the pumps waited until the pumping was over to charge, it would be like: oh shit it just declined your card, we can't get money from you. It would be insanely easy to steal gas.

Most people don't know you can swipe your card, enter your pin, and go through that once they scan the first item. It will wait until the cashier is done and hits total, and it almost instantly prints the reciept.
I've surprised inexperienced cashiers by doing this. They look at me like they are waiting for me to swipe my card after they are done scanning, but I did it while they were scanning my stuff and they didn't notice, then the reciept pops out. 🙂

Of course you look dumb when the machine doesn't accept card input until the cashier selects the type of input it is accepting...

I find it humurous when people swipe their card, input pin, put card back in wallet, wallet back in pocket, I finish scanning items, then I ask if it's debit or credit(I have to select the type before the reader takes it, stupid I know) and they look at me stupidly.

As a retail employee... the slowest is by far the check writers. Goddamn people, get into the 21st century. After that, the people with cash, predominantly the elderly counting out exact change or piling up coupons. The fastest method is small purchase CC that requires no signature, but for most people, it's the debit card winning.

True. Checks are a bitch. No lie. Luckily we run them electronically so people don't have to fill them out. But our machine takes forever to process them. And it charges the account instantly like a debit card.

Our machines are slow and people take forever to type in their pins, or they tell me to run a debit but forgot they never use their pin so it needs to be credit. I can count back change in the time it takes most people to put in a pin or do the process twice. Cash is easy if someone just hands me the bills and leaves out the change.

Never had that problem, not sure what that's about. I don't do it at smaller stores because God only knows what system they have. Only at big stores Walmart/Albertsons, etc.

NOTHING is worst than being behind someone at a grocery store who is using WIC coupons. Luckily at the places I go to you find very few people who use WIC.

Sometimes I pay with my debit card as a credit card and I'm probably one of the faster people that you'll be behind. My card is always in my hand before my stuff even starts ringing up and I've already swiped it prior to the cashier ringing up all of my items.

"Oops! That's my health card"
-person being disorganized, nothing to do w/ debit card and would happen with cash too

"Oops! I can't find my debit card."
-person being disorganized, nothing to do w/ debit card and would happen with cash too

"Oops! The card reader doesn't like your card.
-I guess that sucks if it happens, but I've never seen it happen. I've actually seen cash registers jam more often than cards not being read... but that's rare too.

"Oops! I entered the wrong code."
-person being stupid, nothing to do w/ debit card and they probably can't count the right amount of cash to give either

"Oops! There aren't enough funds in the bank account!"
-poor people suck, how would this be different if they said "oh darn, I don't have enough cash"

Long story short, your issues are with people... not cards at all.

ATOT finds your complaints invalid and it is your fault.

The worst people are the ones who still write checks for stuff like this. They deserve to be shot in the face.

its twice as bad when they dont start writing the check until AFTER the cashier is done scanning/bagging. you can fill out the store name, date, and sign the damn thing in the mean time and just have to spend a few seconds filling in the amount at the end. that alone would be *something* better than most assholes that still write out checks these days

Someone in walmart bought a two 20oz sodas with a plastic bag full of pennies.. then the next person in line decides to pull out food stamp checks, took me 30 mins to get out of there.

Yup, I've been behind women in line at the register who wait for their items to be rung up, and the cashier will tell them their total.
The woman will say "oh, ok" and proceed to dig through her purse to find her checkbook and a pen and eventually get around to writing the check.
I'd hate to have my time be worth so little.

I don't think I've ever had any of the issues you listed happen to me in line, or maybe I just didn't notice. While these things are possible, where do you live that it is so common, in a retirement haven?

Shit I'm a god-damned ninja with my debit card. I've always got it ready before it's ready to slide, then I've got the routine down : tap debit, enter pin, accept total, select no cash back, bamdoneinlike3seconds.

Checks are the worst. Cash is usually okay, so long as the person is actually prepared to pay and the guy working the register isn't a total idiot who can't count. Credit/debit are fast so long as they're ready as well.

99% of this is someone having the common sense and decency to be ready to pay with whatever they're paying with. I've actually seen ninja check writers too, believe it or not, but then you have to put it through that little machine or whatever, so that adds a little time to it. I hate checks though, whatever.

Yeah, I'd say I could finish the whole debit/credit card process in under 15 seconds easily. Probably less! Weird that you think debit/credit cards slow down the line... But we are talking about Canada here...🙂

I see this so often at the department store or the supermarket and it's frustrating me to no end: people using their debit card and it takes longer for the transaction than an 85yo little old lady counting her pennies.

"Oops! That's my health card"
"Oops! I can't find my debit card."
"Oops! The card reader doesn't like your card.
"Oops! I entered the wrong code."
"Oops! There aren't enough funds in the bank account!"

That last one is so annoyingly frequent. How the heck do you not have at least a general idea of how much money you have left in your bank account before buying your groceries with a debit card linked to it? This isn't a credit card where you can pay later, for heaven's sake.

All those above are happening often enough to be really frustrating. Yes I'm older and I sound like a ludite saying it but I go to the bank once a month and take out in cash the money I plan to spend on groceries for that month. When I go to the supermarket, I know how much I have in my wallet and do a simple mental calculation as I shop to make sure I don't buy more than what I can pay. I have a general idea of the final tally and I take my money out of my wallet while waiting in line. I have my cloth bags ready and my food ordered in the way I want the load spread between the bags. Takes seconds for me to pay the cashier and get my change back, then I'm on my merry way.

People will say, yes but I don't have to spend/waste time going to the bank like you. No you don't but you are spending more time in the friggin cashier's line, not just wasting the time of everyone behind you but also your own time. It even happens at the cinema now when buying tickets.

Progress is supposed to make such transactions faster and more convenient, less of a hassle. I'm sorry to say that debit cards are a good idea in general but, because of the people factor, their implementation actually makes things flow more slowly as a whole when buying stuff at the supermarket or department store. How about a little dose of Keep It Simple, Stupid? I have this feeling that the main benefactors of the debit cards are not the customers but the banks themselves, which probably get a return % and have to hire fewer clerks.

Oh! And... Get off my lawn!😡

If your really in that big of a hurry that you can't handle some time standing in line regardless of what the hold up is, then maybe you shouldnt be shopping. Do it when its least crowded.

Heres some tips in life to help you mature faster.
1: learn patience...you do live in a society ya know.
2: Manage time intelligently....shop at night or somethingif you can't handle crowds
3: Realize that not everyone follows the same financial habits as yours for a variety of reasons.
4: Tolerance...again, you live in a society. if you deal with that fact now, you'll be far less annoyed in the future. the annoyance issue is your problem, learn to handle your own emotions instead of blaming cause

I like how the guy paying with cash is complaining about people paying with debit cards.

There are people paying with credit cards complaining about people paying with cash, lol

the only thing that i can complain is after the cashier hands out the receipt or cash they have to put it in their wallet very slowly. at least they could step aside and do that.

i usually stay away from crowded stores.
