I read an article at Cnet yesterday that says the recent price increases are really only temporary. Early next year prices will go down again (as they do every year for RAM). So, I am holding off until then to pick up anymore memory.

<< I'm looking at 256MB, which is a different example, but the first entry that explicitly says "6 layer" that is pulled up by pricewatch.com is $38+$10 shipping. Crucial is $49 including shipping. >>

My typo, I meant 256MB. My point is the same. If you look carefully, you will find some selling the exact same thing around $40 with free shipping (or at least reduced). $10 for a small package is rediculous. I never said get non-Micron memory, I just pointed out that if Crucial raises the price get the quality Micron memory elsewhere while you have the chance.

I hear you and I tend to agree with you. But two points:

1.I'm not sure that I found your link. Which one were you looking at? PM me if you don't want to post it. If it's the "Component Authority" one, they list free shipping, but if you go through to checkout, it rang me up with $21 for shipping the 2nd Day that was supposed to be free.

2. I have never been burned by Crucial. I'm not married to the company - and I doubt anyone else on here is either - but they haven't burned me and they make a high-quality component that has always shipped when it's supposed to and there's never been any funny business with them for any of my half dozen or more orders. This is worth something to me simply because if I try someone else I could get burned. It's like my auto mechanic - I go to him because he's been reliable in the past and I trust him more than I would someone else. He may not be the cheapest, but it would take a sizeable difference in price to make me go elsewhere.

I know you aren't saying "don't buy Crucial" - what I think you are asking is "why buy Crucial if something else is cheaper?" and I guess my answer to that question is that it would have to be a lot cheaper to make me switch.

Christmas is what happened. We are in a recession. I doubt these prices will last.

Think they'll go down again soon too.

But apart from Christmas - perhaps it has to do with the big PC builders getting ready for i845D?

there are 3 kinds of Micron memory modules:
Micron made modules with MT sticker = no warranty from Micron, have to deal with the reseller such as Dell
Micron made modules with MT sticker and CT sticker = sold by Crucial, lifetime warranty from Crucial.
3rd party made modules = what can you expect?

from
http://www.micron.com/products/category.jsp?path=/DRAM&edID=16658#buy

How do I know if my memory was made by Micron?

Solution 1

If the sticker on the module has the letters MTI, it is a Micron module. (Micron Technology, Inc.)

Solution 2

You can check the memory chip to see if it has a Micron symbol:

Solution 3

If the part number on the memory chip begins with the letter "MT" which stands for Micron Technology.

Example: MT4C4M4E8/E9

Solution 4

Many third party companies use Micron chips in creating their own modules. You may find numerous different types of chips on a single module. In this case, you must contact the company you purchased it from to get information on the specifications.

Where do I go for module warranty information?

Solution 1

Please contact the company from which you originally purchased the modules. Only the original purchaser can make a warranty inquiry or claim.

Solution 2

If you had purchased the product through Crucial Technology, please visit the support section at Crucial.com.

This SUCKS! I was going to build a new AMD dual proc system with 1GB memory as soon as the new boards came out, but now I'll probably just wait for memory prices to come down, and for the new .13 micron procs (not to mention the revision 1.1 boards). Oh well. Merry #^@#$@! Christmas. Thanks Micron.

About a year ago, I remember that I paid around $100 for a stick of 128MB SDRAM, then shortly after I buy it prices fall dramatically. That was probably the worst purchace of my life :( . I still regret it. So my advice is wait for it to drop if you can wait. It has to drop some time. When has something made for computers ever increased in value over time?

They are not the "exact same thing." My friend bought a stick of "Micron PC133 CL2". That POS wouldnt run right except at 100MHz CL3. He RMA'ed it, and guess what? The new POS wouldnt run at PC133 either, never mind PC133 CL2. The chips were Micron (I looked). The PCB is important, too.

The ram market is one where its very easy to kick yourself in the ass, this applies to both consumers and manufacturers. :)

I just bought a PC2100 256MB stick a couple weeks ago for $34 shipped, didn't buy 2 of them because I was a cheapass, and have been meaning to get another stick to bring me to 512. Now the price has skyrocketed -- I guess I don't really NEED 512mb, but win2k sure seems to like memory.

OMG!, this is so funny. Not because prices are going up, but because a guy down the hall in my dorm just sold me a 256MB stick of PC2100 for $20 yesterday! He was like, "Dude, I just need to get rid of this stuff, so take it." So I jumped on it right away (it's Crucial RAM he's used for about 2 months, no overclocking).

And now I come here and see that same stick has now more than doubled in price...whoa, good for me.

As for the rest of the RAM industry, what's going on? Why are prices suddenly spiking in such a short time period. Prices just don't double in a matter of 2-3 weeks.

Wow, the price really has gone up a lot. Sure makes me glad I picked up 512mb of PC2100 DDR from Crucial for about $30 each instead of only buying 256mb.:)

If you really want to feel good about it. I paid about $100 for my first stick of DDR. That was back when the AMD760 first came out though. I thought I was getting a real deal at the time.

Does that mean if I buy my 2L Pepsi from Hy-Vee, I'll have more peace of mind than if I buy the 2L Pepsi from K-Mart?
>>

Yes because I don't trust K-Mart.
